Stayed four nights at Hale Kua, which was our base to explore the south shore, Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park. It is hidden away in a rural area close to the wilderness, about 1/2 hour from Lihue (45 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic). Make sure you have proper instructions as it is somewhat hard to find, especially at night time.
We are not beach people, so enjoyed the tropical forest setting away from the touristy developments around Poipu very much (the beaches are only a 15 minute drive away).
We found the owners to be very accommodating, the suite was spacious, clean and well equipped and everything we needed was there. It is fully self-contained but you will need to bring groceries along. However, considering the high cost of groceries in Hawaii, we decided it made more sense to eat out (Kalaheo Cafe in Kalaheo is a 5 minute drive and good).
Good value for money and would definitely stay there again.
