“Glad we found this tropical hideaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2011

Stayed four nights at Hale Kua, which was our base to explore the south shore, Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park. It is hidden away in a rural area close to the wilderness, about 1/2 hour from Lihue (45 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic). Make sure you have proper instructions as it is somewhat hard to find, especially at night time.
We are not beach people, so enjoyed the tropical forest setting away from the touristy developments around Poipu very much (the beaches are only a 15 minute drive away).
We found the owners to be very accommodating, the suite was spacious, clean and well equipped and everything we needed was there. It is fully self-contained but you will need to bring groceries along. However, considering the high cost of groceries in Hawaii, we decided it made more sense to eat out (Kalaheo Cafe in Kalaheo is a 5 minute drive and good).
Good value for money and would definitely stay there again.

“Great Value, very clean, missed being on the ocean”

Hale Kua was a great relaxing spot for out vacation. Although there were others staying in the building, our neighbors were as quiet and private as we were. Wonderful breezes and loved listening to the island sounds(except the forever crowing roosters) Another review suggested keeping windows in bedroom closed and run the fan to avoid being woken up at 4. We did this and it worked fine. The owners were very nice..only had limited contact with them. Loved having beach chairs, washer and dryer and boogie boards to make use of. Our only regret was we weren't on the water. This was the first time we had stayed at a b&b for vacation and although we loved the peace and quiet we felt a little remote to wander in the evening or search out nightlife. The daily and nightly grind of driving everywhere grew old as the week progressed. We usually stay at a resort so are used to having everything pretty close. I do feel the great price at Hale Kua was a major consideration for us this time. We ate at Brick Oven Pizza...didn't see the big deal about this place..Brennecke's was enjoyable..decent food great location...We absolutely recommend HaloHalo ocean tour up the Napali coast..We did the sunset cruise...great crew..comfortable catamaran...decent food awesome price..Get something at the Waimea canyon food stop..delicious pineapple and shaved coconut

“Great end to the vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2010

My Fiance and I stayed at the Coral Tree room and loved it. There was a ton of space, the kitchen was well appointed, and we had a good amount of privacy. Unlike a lot of other places we had seen inland in Kauai, there was actually a good view across the valley from the room. We couldn't see the ocean from our unit (although you can from some others).

“Like Visiting Friends”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2010

Nice accomodations. Tropical surroundings. Relaxed and quiet. Really enjoyed the condiments in the fridge and spices in cupboard. Many extras like beach chairs, mats, beach umbrella, and cooler. Did not appreciate being woken up by rooster at 3:40 a.m. That would be the only reason I wouldn't go back. With all the baby chicks this problem is only going to get worse. The Nene's (Canadian Geese) have been reintroduced, but the excaped chickens have no natural predators. This has to put a damper on tourism in the future. It was very rainy when we went, but the waterfalls were great and the rain is not cold.

“Quiet and Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

We really enjoyed our stay at Hale Kua B&B. They didn't have many people there so they upgraded us to the cottage without changing the price. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. We didn't see them much during our stay after we checked in so it felt very private and isolated which was great. The breakfast was just homemade muffins that they left for us but they were good. It was a little out of the way but it was very quiet and we slept great.
