“What a shame”

We have never sent a review before but wanted to make sure in the future others could make an intelligent decision about whether to stay here or not.

We stayed at the Bushido Cottage during Decemeber 2007. The first thing we have to say is some of the pictures shown on the website are the owner's own home! We feel this is false advertising. The house was not completely clean when we arrived and the bedding in one of the bedrooms smelled moldy and musty.

In addition, the owners felt it was okay to come into our place at any time! No privacy!

The other concerns we have about the place are the owner claimed the second cottage was close by turned in a different direction, so we assuredly wouldn't hear the other renters and retain our privacy for peace and quiet which is what we wanted. This was not the case! Since one of the windows in the bedroom at our cottage had a missing pane of glass we could hear outdoor noises (without being able to shut it) but also all the talking from the inside of the cottage next door!

We would not stay here again and couldn not recommend this place to anyone. For the amount of money we spent we expected the details to be handled. It's a shame because the place is in a wonderful location in the mountains and the grounds are lovely. Maybe some of the polish of better days gone by could be restored for a place others would want to stay!

“Third World Feeling”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2005

Four of us traveled to Kapaa from Oregon to be at a secluded place for 10 days in September, away from all the traffic. Bushido Cottage is decorated beautifully nestled in a tropical garden and is quite private. The place is full of matience problems. Out of three showers, only one worked well and the outdoor shower didn't work at all. The kitchen has very poor equitment and is very difficult to cook a meal in. The outdoor furniture is not usable. Lovely as the place may be, it has some serious problems that a tourist should not have to deal with.
The second cottage called the Nalikka was empty all the time we were there. It was not cleaned up since the last people left- coffee grounds still in the pot and the bed was not made. It made a lasting impression that gave the whole place the feel of a third world country.

“Loved the place!”

My husband and I spent 10 days on Kauai in December. We split the trip up into three separate stays. We began the trip on the southern side of the island and spent three days at Marjorie's Inn. We then packed up and headed up to Kokee Lodge where we spent four days. Finally, we ended our trip on the northeast side at Kauai Cottages in Kapaa for the end of our trip. Kauai Cottages was a perfect ending to a perfect trip. Cheryl, the owner, is a great hostess. She is a retired flight attendant who has decorated her own home and her two guest cottages with items from the far east. We stayed in the smaller of the two, the one bedroom off the pool. The place was beatifully decorated, comfortable and well equipped. Gorgeous lava rock shower, fluffly towells, very clean and modern kitchen, bamboo flooring everywhere, great bed with wonderful quilts and...our favorite...a great reading nook out on the front deck overlooking the pool. My husband and I spent many hours snuggled up on this great long bench reading and enjoying a glass of wine. From Kauai Cottages you can buzz down the road and be at any of the touristy spots along the eastern coast within seconds. By staying at Kauai Cottages (rather than one of those condos on the ocean) you have luxurious comfort and lots of privacy. Initially I was not sure it would be worth the price. I think we paid $120 per night. It was absolutely worth it. After spending four days at Kokee hiking through the red mud (and saving $$ because Kokee is only $40 per night) we felt justified in treating ourselves to Kauai Cottages on our last three nights. During our three days there we used one day to head to the northern coast and hike the Napali Coastline.....not to be missed. We spent one day in Kapaa doing a short hike of the Sleeping Giant (great views) and we spent one day shopping and enjoyed a good meal in town. Kauai Cottages website: http://www.kauai-cottages.com/
