“REALLY something else.”

The Kauai Country Inn can actually best be described as a Bed and Breakfast because of the complimentary breakfast that is served in the entrance hall each day at 8:00 AM (9:00 AM during weekends). There are pastries, cornflakes, coffee and tea available and you can decide for yourselves whether you feel like sharing your honeymoon schedule with the other guests. "You won't miss out on milk and fresh papayas if you were smart enough to stop by a Big Save Market the night before." Point taken.

The Green Rose Suite is really something else and can only be categoried as a luxourious get-a-way unlike any other. The bedroom and living room are XXL. There are lots of colorful details in the room which could make you want to redecorate your own place. The wooden carvings and the skull of a deer's head also do the trick increasing an either romantic or dramatic atmosphere. The kitchen and the bar are quite impressive, with all the modern equipment at hand. The bathroom is neat and functional with a good hot shower and more than enough clean towels.

The private veranda is the best option to have a tropical self-prepared breakfast. You have to take into consideration to install your plates the very moment the early rain showers stop. If not, it's simple: you get soaked.

There is a chance you never want to leave Kauai Island when you found a spot like this to come home to after spending your luckiest days exploring Waimea Canyon, Wailua Falls and the magnificent Na Pali Coast.

“Island Hideway”

We spent our honeymoon at KCI after being married on Lydgate Beach using the inn's wedding service. The Plumeria Suite was the perfect island getaway for us. If you want a place that is secluded yet self-contained, this is it. The suite had a full kitchen with a large fridge, roomy master suite and a huge bathroom with a jetted tub, separate shower, and double sinks. There is a separate living area with a big screen tv and dvd player as well as tons of dvds. This suite has a large, private, wrap-around deck, perfect for sitting and watching the jungle in the mornings.
Breakfast is simple yet good--pastries, muffins, oatmeal, and the best coffee ever. Staff members Jeff and Tricia gave good advice for local sites and shopping, all well within driving of the inn. Mike Hough (owner) and Jeff were especially helpful our entire stay at KCI.
The northwest and southwest ends of the islands were easily accessible and an hour away. You can see the Spouting Horn, Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, as well as the Coconut Coast, and some neat little towns like Kapaa, and Lihue.
The best shave ice we found was near the cruise ship docks, Anchor Cove. You can't miss it.
Skip the mustang for your car rental; get the Jeep; you won't be sorry. Kauai's roads are decent yet can be hard to navigate after the rains which occur nearly every day on some part of the island.

Room Tip: The Plumeria Suite has a harder bed than we preferred hence the 3 star sleep rating. Other suites ha...

“Sad to leave”

This was the 3rd place my husband and I stayed at while on our honeymoon in Kauai, after staying in Poipu and Waimea. We fell in love immediately with KCI. You pull in to your designated spot (we stayed in the Green Rose Suite) and found an envelope with our names on it with our code to enter the suite. It was that easy. The suite is HUGE! So much personality throughout the entire inn. Top knotch kitchen stocked with everything you could need, 2 comfy day beds, dining room table, couch and TV make up the living quarters. The bedroom was very spacious, the canopy bed faced a wall of windows and then the bathroom which was stocked with anything and everything you could need. Beach chairs and towels, anything you would need for a day at the beach. A beautiful lanai and grounds. Mike and Martina really thought of everything you could need for your stay - truly was our home away from home.

KCI was a bit away from the attractions, but you're in the beautiful mountains. A scenic 10 minute drive will take you to downtown Kapa'a. While we were staying here, we went to Lihue for a helicopter tour, a few beaches (Lydgate and Anini), up to the St Regis for a brunch. All were in close distance - a very good location for this part of the island. My husband and I cooked 2 wonderful dinners in the kitchen at KCI and played a few rounds of chess on the giant board in the bedroom. The keeper Jeff gave us a great recommendation on where to eat one night - Verde in Kapa'a. A must go, we went twice - thank you Jeff!!

We unfortunately only spent 3 nights here and were so sad to leave (and we were going to the St Regis!). Mike & Martina - we will be back on our next trip to Kauai!

Room Tip: Green Rose suite is great for honeymooners!

“A real sense of home.”

Although The Kauai Country Inn is listed as a bed and breakfast it is more accurately characterized as an inn with self-catering suites. Staying there feels like having your own apartment. And there's even free laundry!

We stayed for five lovely nights in the Orchid Suite, which had a spacious bedroom with a deliciously comfortable bed, air conditioning, closets, cupboards, a desk and a new iMac computer. There was also a kitchenette/living room area with comfortable seating and a very pretty ceramic tile table and kitchen chairs, a decent bathroom with bathtub and shower, and a spacious and much-appreciated lanai. The kitchenette is very well equipped, though there is no oven or stove. There is, however, a microwave, BBQ outside and a plug-in one-burner electric element. Because the property is outside of town (it truly is a "country inn"), we were glad to be able to eat out during the day but cook dinner at home. The roads are windy and dark.

We loved the east side of the island, but do be aware that it is the wettest part of Kauai. You are in a tropical rainforest, and it really does rain every day. Mostly in the evening or early morning, but it's wet and there are mosquitoes. Bring bug spray! The hiking is great--try the Sleeping Giant Mountain trail. Beaches are nearby. Indeed, nothing is far away in Kauai--the island is only 33 miles across. Nearby Kapa'a town is funky. Don't miss the fish tacos at Monico's Taqueria; they also make a fabulous Mai Tai.

The only thing I would add in summation is that the facilities at the Kauai Country Inn were top-rate, but we found it odd that we did not meet the owners or other guests, as is usual in a "bed and breakfast" establishment and often part of the pleasure of staying in one. The owners live in a separate house and they employ people to interact with guests--a shout out to young Jeff who was very nice and helpful. There is a continental breakfast available (coffee, & tea, baked goods, yogurt), but mostly people don't bother or pick up something and take it back to their suite. So, it's private for sure, but if you're the chatty type who likes to socialize with other guests, this place might not work for you.

Thank you for the great review, we truly appreciate it, and are always happy to hear when guests had a great time.
We have staff, usually our manager Jeff, put out a free continental breakfast daily and help guests with any questions they many have about their stay at the Inn or the Island in general. Breakfast is usually a time to socialize with other guests and our staff, but this of course always depends on the individual travelers at the time. Some guests enjoy mixing and mingling, while others are more private. At the Kauai Country Inn you can have both: ample privacy and as much interaction with fellow guests or our staff as you like.

“Great place. In the country, but not far from towns and activities.”

We were a party of five so we were surprised to find a house like this that had a suite that would accommodate us.. We had the Plumeria Suite with two bedrooms and a daybed in the living area. This suite also had a wraparound lanai and when we stepped out on it we felt like we were in the middle of a jungle. The lush foliage was beautiful and the sound of jungle like birds made the feeling complete. The complimentary continental breakfast and free to guests laundry room were great. The suite was large with a fully equipped kitchen. I highly recommend this place.
