“Right for the price, but probably wouldn't return”

This place is quite a bargain, but with that low price comes some quirks that would keep me from returning. First the good ... the rooms are very clean as is the outside property. We received a nice gift basket upon arrival. There are also beach supplies for guest use. The quirks ... there are weird little notes everywhere: don't put your luggage or other belongings on the bed or furniture; don't do this; don't do that; etc. A book with notes tells you it's your option whether or not you want to make the bed. What? Is that as opposed to telling me I must? Another tells you the beds and pillows are comfotable and they know because they've slept in them. Great, but how about flipping the mattress once in a while. The notes were all quite off-putting (they could have all been worded in a much friendlier way, but I don't think English is her strong suit as her cancellation policy is worded incorrectly on the form she mails out) and made me think the owner is not relaxed enough to operate an inn. Instead, they make it come off as though the paying guests are the enemy to be warned at every turn. Breakfast started out great the first day - a warm egg dish plus fruit and bread - but went downhill from there to just including fruit and bread. We never received a breakfast beverage nor did we receive the bottled water or drinks promised on their website. The owner only talked to us at check-in and never once stopped by while we ate outside in the mornings or sat in the spa to ask how everything was. We basically never saw her again. She wasn't even around to say good bye. Part of the reason for staying at a B&B is to have a welcoming host and someone who makes you feel at home. We didn't get that. Even her emails when I made the reservation were rather curt. Noise from the owners does begin around 6 a.m. when you hear them and their dog above you walking around. In all, priced correctly and very tidy, but not quite as good as promised on the website.

“Hale Lani is delightful!”

Imagine going out the door and picking your own juicy limes from their trees to make an exotic before dinner mai tai ... or maybe a delectable juicy papaya for an impromptu snack before climbing into your private (just cleaned before each guest arrives) outdoor hot tub and gazing up at the billions of stars. This cozy B&B is high up on a hill in a quiet residential area, so you feel like you're 'home'after a day of hiking the canyon or relaxing at a beach. Ruth and Sandy really pampered us with breakfasts delivered at our door in a cooler every morning -- yogurt parfaits with fresh fruits, hot yummy egg casseroles, fresh pastries, all delicious! I mentioned in passing that I should look into nursing jobs on the island so that I could stay longer... 5 minutes later I was given a computer printout of positions at the local hospital! Ruth and Sandy really did MORE than their best to make my vacation perfect! Would I stay somewhere else in Kauai??? NEVER! I can't wait to return 'home'!

“Heaven on Earth”

We have lost count as to how many times we have stayed at Hale Lani. Five? We can't fathom staying anywhere else. We know what to expect..perfection! Sandy and Ruth are consistently gracious and eager to please. We love the spotless rooms, cozy atmosphere, up-to-date furnishing, homemade breakfasts, clean hot tub, tropical grounds, fresh fruit from their own trees...I could go on and on. What they advertize on their website is true and actually understated. Go to Hale Lani...just go! :)

“Could not have wished for nicer!!!”

My husband and I recently returned from our wonderful honeymoon stay at the Hale Lani Bed and Breakfast, and we could not have wished for a better place. The proprieters and hosts Ruth and Sandy were very welcoming and nice. We were fortunate enough to stay in their hideway cottage located in the back of their property. The cottage was filled with every amenity possible. Fully stocked on islands soaps and lotions, and a wonderful welcome basket filled with goodies. The accomadations were spectacular; the bed was extremely comfortable.
Plenty of towels and beach equipment at our exposure. And we cannot forget about the hot tub. It was perfect. Jumping into the hot tub after a day of sight seeing and beach, was just amazing, especially when the sky was full of stars. Their breakfasts were always a treat; every morning would could not wait to see what they had delivered. We could not have wished for a more perfect and secluded cottage. We would totally recommend it!!!

“Nice rooms, nervous hosts”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2003

Well, based on some of the great reviews here, we decided to give this place a try for a long visit. At first, it was great and they were pretty friendly. We stayed in one of the units that is in the main house, not the seperate cottage. After a few days we realized that she was coming into our room everyday to check out what we were doing, and we did not feel that we had the privacy we were looking for. Also the hot tub for this unit was overlooked by their windows from their house on the second floor. We could always hear them in the house in the mornings and evenings, and were frequently woken up by ruth on the telephone, or their arguements. They seem a little too controlling to really be running a bed and breakfast - little signs everywhere reminding you not to use the furniture for your belongings... What does that mean, where were we supposed to put them??? Also, since we were going to the beach everyday, we needed to rinse and wash our swimsuits and clothes, and hang them up to dry, for which we got a note suggesting that we have to go into town to use a laundromat for that - that's the last thing that we want to waste time on when we are on vacation. Who washes a swimsuit at a laundromat anyway? Other than their weirdness, the place was impressively clean and nice, we just wish they hadn't bothered us so much. Breakfasts were nice for the first few days, but then it seemed she had run out of recipies, and we got very tired of variations of cottage cheese inside some fruit. Also, we were suprised on our last day - they were upset that we were not out of the room by 11 AM, which they never mentioned at all before, and he was very impolite and agressive about it.
