“My agent was right - Wonderful place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2009

We usually stay beachfront in the tropics, for sun time and snorkeling. My travel agent said on Kauai, the beaches are not necessarily the best part - you really should try this place in the mountains, and she was right! Yes, it does look like an ordinary neighborhood, but the drive up to this neighborhood is very scenic and passes a nice waterfall. Also, Ruth and Sandy really do run a first class place, including the availability of much recreational gear, conciege-type services, and for the unit we were in, a private back yard with a hot tub. The best part were the breakfasts! Freshly baked breads, fresh local fruit, breakfast parfaits .... If only the local feral roosters would sleep later in the morning, but they seem to be everywhere on Kauai. This was one of the two best places we stayed during our 3 week trip to several Hawaiian islands and a couple of islands to the west! And it had the best breakfast food during the trip!

“Suburban location, many mosquitoes”

A few things to know about the Hale Lani:

* The home is in a suburban neighborhood like any other in the US. It’s like you drove down the street to stay at a friend’s house. Don’t expect a Hawaiian experience.

* We never saw a mosquito during our week in Kauai (mid-July), but at the Hale Lani we encountered many. This made it impossible to sit outside and our room was invaded when we opened the door to move our luggage in. The house is in a particularly wet area of the island, thus the abundance of mosquitoes.

* Other items: A TV was constantly blaring from the upstairs porch (Fox News!) The owners have a large, unfriendly German Shepard that barks every time you come in. Expect your room to be entered when you are not there.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2009

Our kids (7 & 9) had a great time playing with the dog. The hot tub was also a lot of fun for them. We are glad that the host changed water in the hot tub for new guests, which not all B&B's do. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. Ruth and her husband was very polite and friendly. We left a poster at their home, Ruth shipped it to us right away. I will not hesitate recommending them to our friends.

“At home in paradise”

We stayed in the cottage at Hale Lani for one week to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. This was our first trip to Kauai, and we agree that staying here really made the trip for us. Kauai is spectacular, and it was really wonderful to not stay at a resort. We felt like we were coming home at the end of each day. As everybody mentions, the breakfasts really were delightful, hearty, and delicious. Most days we ate our wonderful breakfast and then only had to snack in the afternoons, and that carried us through to dinner. The baked strawberry French toast in particular was yummy enough to be a dessert.
Ruth & Sandy pretty much left us alone. If you are looking for a lot of interaction w/hosts, you won't be very happy here. But we like our privacy, so we didn't feel like we were missing out on anything. We communicated mostly via notes, and that worked just fine. Sandy brought us an amazing piece of fresh ono right off his boat that we grilled up in our private backyard. And the unlimited access to the fresh lychees was unforgettable. These fruits are beyond delicious, and they are very expensive ($5 for about 10 of them, if you can find them!). Sandy encouraged us to take as many as we wanted & even set a ladder up for us! I probably ate a pound or more of them each day we were there.
Ruth & Sandy gave us great restaurant recommendations, and they even gave us a lovely card and gift certificate for one of their favorite local restaurants. They were responsive to any of our questions or needs, and we simply could not have been happier. We are in love with Kauai and hope to return as often as we can. We wouldn't think of staying anywhere else!
If you do stay, there is a stunning hike at the top of Kuamo'o road. Just minutes from the B&B is a gorgeous reservoir. These spots are absolutely not to be missed! I can't wait to return!

  • Liked — Privacy, breakfasts, advice from locals, lychee tree
  • Disliked — Honestly can't think of anything negative.

“Great experience! Highly recommended!!”

Hale Lani did not miss any details! We stayed in Lani's Studio for four nights. The room looked exactly like it did on line and was spotless. Upon check in there was a nice basket of snacks and bottled water in the fridge. There were dishes, saran wrap, baggies, and coffee/cream/sugar in the kitchenette. There was also a small fridge and microwave oven. There were a lot of extras including Hawaiian lotions in the bathroom, bath robes, and fresh flowers in our room. Outside there was a storage closet with boogie boards, snorkels, beach mats, and beach towels for your use.
Breakfasts were delivered to your room each morning in a styrofoam cooler. They ranged from a hot meal to fruit and bread. This was different from any other B&B breakfast that I have had before. At first I missed the communal dining experience, but one morning we ate in our room in our bathrobes!
We did not speak to the innkeepers as often as we have at other B&Bs (usually over breakfast). They were available, but kept to themselves.
There is about a ten minute drive to the main highway.
They do have two large German Shepards. The dogs were very friendly, but you should be aware that they are there before you book.
The hottub was on the patio. It was very clean, but not private. Although, we had it to ourselves each night. Sorry, no skinny dipping!!
There were several fruit trees on the property that you can "help yourself" to whatever is in season.
I would recommend the Hale Lani to everyone!
