I stayed at the Dilly Dally House in late January / early February and had a wonderful experience. The Dilly Dally House is situated 10 minutes from Kapaa, located almost halfway between the North Shore and South Shore. In my opinion, perfectly situated to explore the island's many sights and sounds.
Upon arrival, Pat, the owner, welcomed me and gave me a nice tour of the property. Every guest is given a copy of the "blue book"--sort of the ultimate guide to Kauai. Keep this book and use it--it has the best info.
I stayed at the Cottage, which I loved. It's like having your own home. Pat and Diane are excellent hosts and have literally thought of everything you need and more. My room had all the accoutrements I needed, including a beach bag with two towels and a red cooler. I had a little toaster oven, coffee-maker, plates, glasses, spoons, forks. On top of that, I had not one but two flat screen televisions with blu ray DVD and Direct TV. If I have one regret, it's that I didn't get to spend as much time as I'd like lazily enjoying the indoors.
Outside of the Cottage, the house supplies guests with the latest DVDs. At the time of my visit, this included movies like "The Help", "The Debt", "50/50", "Ides of March" and "Moneyball". An iPad is accessible if you need to access your e-mail. There are drawers of accessories including bug spray, SPF lotion, games and other stuff I never realized I needed. The grilling area includes wet shoes, boogie boards and fishing rods. There's even a laundry room specifically for guests. After a muddy hike, it came in very handy.
The breakfasts are BEYOND delicious. In fact, we were so well-fed at breakfast that lunch wasn't quite needed. They typically do sweet one day and savory the next. Savory dishes are usually accompanied by fresh-baked goods. Sweet dishes are served with three kinds of syrup--coconut, pineapple and maple. Fresh juices are a staple, so is coffee.
Pat, Diane and Justine are great hosts. Never intrusive but there when needed.
Finally, I had the best time getting to know my fellow guests. Breakfast conversation was always fun, interesting and full of humor.
I look forward to my next stay at the Dilly Dally House.
Tips and other things to note:
- The house is actually fairly easy to find, but if you are not great with directions or don't have GPS on your car, make sure to follow directions that come with your reservations.
- If you are the type of person who wants to have room service and vegetate in an insulated mega-resort style environment, this is not the place for you.
- If you want to have the perfect blend of a great place to rest/chill and a place that encourages you to get out and explore the beautiful Garden Island, this is the BEST place to stay.
