“Excellent choice for exploring the island”

I like to explore places when I travel so a beach front resort is never my preference. Instead, cleanliness and a bug free environment are much more important to me. This time I chose Hole O Nanakai mostly because of the good reviews here and they happen to have a room for solo travelers so the price was also incredible. The property absolutely lived up to my expectations. I stayed in the Maile room on the 2nd floor, with a shared bath with another room. There's a huge kitchen and beautifully decorated separate dinning and sitting areas on the same floor. The glass sliding doors open to an ocean view patio, where you can see the sunrise. Everywhere is spotlessly clean. The only thing that may not be ideal for some people is there's no sound insulation between the 2 rooms upstairs. That was not a problem to me and in my past experience including this time, most travelers in shared properties are considerate.

The location may look far from attractions and difficult to find, but actually it's perfect as long as you have a car, since Kauai is a small island. The biggest advantage is it's only about one hour drive from Waimea canyon--where you need to get in early to see things (otherwise the clouds build up quickly). And being away from beach towns means you get to see the milky way right in your front yard.

The outdoor advices you get from the hostess Sheila are invaluable. She started offering advices right after I made my reservation, like where to find cheap rental cars. She prepares driving and hiking maps for her guests, and she'll tell you what the best time to visit what place, which I was not able to find in any of my tour books.

And the breakfast--all I can say is it's probably better than what you eat at home. There's always a fruit basket or salads, several types of cereals, breads/cakes, milk, and juice. Sheila even offers free bottled water for you to take with during the day. And she sets up the breakfast the night before, so you don't have to give up your breakfast if you need to leave early for activities.

I would absolutely stay here next time I'm in Kauai.

“Restful, lovely and a wonderful hostess”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2010

My adult daughter and I stayed with Sheila in late November 2010 and had a wonderful experience. The breakfasts were delicious and we loved that we could eat when WE wanted too - especially being on East Coast time. The B&B is really more like having your own little apt with a spectacular deck and view of the Pacific. And Sheila steered us to some great off the beaten sites on Kauai...not to mention graciously mailed us a forgotten item. The beds were very comfortable and there are many thoughtful touches such as bathrobes, snacks in the fridge and lovely soaps and shampoos. We would return in a heartbeat and hope to do so soon.

“Beautiful stay in Kauai's Hale O Nanakai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2010

Sheila's B&B is really beautiful, fantastic ocean view, very clean appartement, tasteful accommodation. Your feel always welcome and absolutely comfortabel. Sheila helps you with a lot of really good advices what you can do in Kauai and what you need to see. In her big living room where you get an amazing breakfast with everything you need (you can also sit on her gorgeos terrace), she also has a lot of guidebooks and Flyers to help you to decide what you want to do. Our room was amazing! Just see the pictures! You can also find her on facebook. We would absolutely recommend this B&B in Kauai! It was amazing!
The only thing you need to know about Kauai... there are a lot of cocks... if you have a light sleep they could wake you up even if you lay in the best ansd most comfortable bed of the world. They are everywhere on the island and could wake you up around 5 o'clock in the morning. My friend doesn't heard them. Its different from person to person...
Everything else was really good and perfect for a stay on Kauai! Visit Sheila and make your own positive experiences! Hopefully we can come back one day to this beautiful Island and B&B :-)

“Never again... lost our deposit and stayed somewhere else.”

We flew in for our honeymoon expecting a romantic getaway. We booked the
private suite in order to have a bit more privacy and no shared living
space. Little did we know what we were in for. While the B&B was clean,
there was little else that I can say for it. The "fruit basket" consisted
of a couple of kiwis, and apple, and a pineapple bought at Costco. As we
toured the property with the owner, Sheila, we noticed that her bed was on
the opposite side of the wall from ours. When I voiced a privacy concern,
we were on our honeymoon after all, we were told that she wears headphones
and earplugs at night so we shouldn't be concerned. My wife was not okay
with answer, nor was I. We asked for a refund of our deposit ($400) and
told her that we would be staying else where. Shelia immediately informed
us that she had already spent the money on the water bill and the mortgage
and that we would not be receiving any type of refund.

We ended up staying in Poipu Beach at a fantastic condo. Never again will
we book a B&B sight unseen like this. What a terrible first experience.

We appreciate our guest’s feedback, however, it is truly unfortunate when a vacation hits a snag that could easily have been avoided by taking a couple of simple steps:
1. Research the type of property being booked
2. Read the cancellation policy
Researching a property prior to making a reservation is extremely valuable in understanding the difference between a hotel, bed & breakfast, condo, or inn. Hale O Nanakai is listed on 5 different websites where detailed descriptions and numerous photos clearly show what we have to offer. Most bed and breakfasts are located in a home where the inn keeper lives on the property. Guest’s rooms are generally in the bedrooms of the house or in a "mother-in-law" unit attached to the house. In most contemporary homes, rooms – including bedrooms -- share common walls. In the instance cited in the review, the wall between the innkeeper’s bedroom and the garden unit is constructed of cement block , and covered with dense particle board, ensuring little chance of noise transference from one side of the wall to the next.

In addition to researching a property prior to reserving, it is equally important to read and understand the cancellation policy. Our cancellation policy can be found on the reservations page of our website, and the guest is required to click on a box that says he or she has read and agrees to the stated cancellation policy upon submitting a reservation request. Additionally, a copy of the cancellation policy is furnished to each and every guest at the time the reservation is made. Our reservation policy (which is similar to the policies of most Kauai B&Bs) clearly states that refunds for cancellations more than 30 days before the day of the reservation will be subject to a $50 processing fee plus any credit card charges. Cancellations made 30 days or less prior to the arrival date forfeit an amount equal to deposit.

In addition to a generous fruit basket of locally grown fruit from the nearby Lawai Valley, our welcome basket also includes OJ, milk, Kauai coffee, guava jam, homemade rolls and breads, and complimentary bottled water, cans of ice tea and a package of Kauai cookies. Because some of these items are perishable, they are stored not in the basket of fruit, but inside the refrigerator.

“B&B perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2010

I travel extensively and I'm always on the look out for what, in my opinion, makes the perfect B&B. I thought they didn't exist but then I found Hale O Nanakai. The accomodation was spotless and furnished to a very high and comfortable standard but the overwhelming consideration was the thoughtfulness of the owners in creating a very relaxed environment in which you immediately felt at home to the point that if you stayed more than two nights, you really would start calling it home ! I honestly have nothing negative to say. I could have moved in and never left.
