“Great place to stay on West Side of Hawaii”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We've stayed at this hotel 3 times now. Each time stayed with Marriott points redemption (thus, for us it was a great value). The hotel is great, with spacious rooms, good views (we always book the cheapest - mountain view - room and always ask to be upgraded to ocean view. Worked 2 out of 3 times. They are typically good for Marriott elites). If you are redeeming Marriott rewards points, you do not "have to" pay the $25 per day resort fee. Look in your room reservation papers - it will say it there - it's not mandatory for you. If you are gold or higher, tell them you want to pay for the daily activities fee - 15 per day, which will cover your parking and you get the internet for free being a Gold (or higher) member. If you're silver, they you can opt out to pay only (only!) 18 per day for self parking (provided you can live without the internet during your vacation stay). Remember, the resort fee covers parking, internet and calls to Canada/US.

The pools are amazing at this hotel. One of them is heated, which means you can go and have fun in Hawaii any time of the year. They also have a very nice private beach (well, not really private since HI law does not allow for private beaches).

Food is really expensive, so you'd be much better off renting a car and going out to each elsewhere.

Overall, pretty good hotel with good service.

Room Tip: always ask if you can get upgraded to an ocean view room.

“Uninspiring 3/4 star hotel, extra resort fee”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed a week in February. We had a west facing room that suited us as we got the sunset but not the sun during the day. Other rooms face north west and south west so either get no sun or lots of sun. The room was airy, clean and linen changed. There were no extras in the room; wine glasses, plates and a microwave were provided on request.

The Hotel is well situated within an easy walk of the two shopping malls. The ABC supermarket in Queens is well stocked, we purchased our croissants there every morning.

The hotel does most things well but nothing exceptional. It was built in the seventies, it has been refurbished but is beginning to look its age. The public areas are dated, uninspiring and uncomfortable.

The beach is good. I swam everyday but you have to watch out for the rocks; snorkelling was disappointing as visibility is poor.

The Hotel charges a daily 25 dollar resort fee irrespective of whether you use the car park or internet (which is what they say it is for). This is outrageous. We complained but to no avail.

“Pretty average hotel, not worth the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

It is clean but dated. The hotel room looks more like an average 3/4 star hotels on the Mainland US, then a beach resort hotel. It is quite clean. I think Hawaii has some catching up to do compare to the nice (and relatively inexpensive) beach resort hotels in South East Asia.

The hotel charges a resort fee. However they offer a lower rate when I asked, since my wife is already a platinum member, so she would have gotten free Wifi. So, we only have to pay for the self parking. However, during the 5 days we were there, the parking lot was never locked, and anyone could come and go without any access card. They also didn't offer any other things that would normally be offered to Platinum member, not even a bottle of water. And they don't have a VIP lounge on this property.

The beach is pretty nice but rocky so it's not suitable for swimming. The swimming pool looks nice but pretty crowded during the day. But the nice thing is it is open 24 hours a day.

For the price, this place is too expensive. But it may be the norm for the Waikoloa area, or the Big Island as a whole. When we got here, we found out about many of the time shared apartment nearby available for rent, and they are much cheaper then the hotel rate, but bigger and nicer, and many with kitchen. Just search online and you will find.

The rooms in the hotel should have good view of sunset (at least from ours which is way behind the trees, swimming pool, etc). I managed to get some great photos from the balcony. But was quite disappointed when we were told our room was an upgrade, with an ocean view.

There are plenty to do on the Big Island, and it is beautiful. So, spend your time else where. There is really nothing much to do on this property.

Being in Waikoloa is nice since it's not as far to Hilo from here compare to from Kona. There are some nice things to see at the North side too. The hotel is close to the King Shops and Queen's Marketplace. There is a food court in the Queen's. And there are many other restaurants near by, and in the Hilton. They can be expensive but nevertheless it's not like there is nothing to eat nearby.

“Great place to stay”

We spent three nights at this beautiful resort and enjoyed everything about it. It's convenient (20 minutes) to the Kona airport. It has great facilities, a courteous staff and wonderful accommodations. Food and bar service were outstanding and reasonably priced. We will return.

“lovely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We just returned from a 6 night stay here. Our family stayed next door at the Hilton, we decided on the Marriott at the last minute because the Hilton was out of "ocean view" rooms. We soon discovered that an "ocean view" at the Marriott is pretty much the same as a "partial ocean view" at the Hilton. (they are implying that the palm trees will block your view, no biggie for me) We inquired about upgrading our room at the Marriott, here's what we learned...an "ocean view" room is set back from the beach and overlooks a garden before you see the beach front, an "ocean front" room is closer to the beach. All rooms at this hotel face the beach, so you really can't go wrong with the cheapest room, although they are small, by American hotel standards.

All of the staff were friendly, not like the Hilton, where the front desk can be so unhelpful.

My only complaint is that there's no room service in the middle of the day for lunch, this became a problem when my whole family got sick with sore throats.

We also learned that the Hilton has a shuttle and you can use it if your not staying there. If we wanted to go to dinner at The Hilton we would have the Marriott valets call over and ask if someone could pick us up, they always could and of course we tipped them well. They also returned us back to the Marriott after dinner.

Room Tip: "ocean front" 6th floor is the best room you could ask for
