This was the second time we stayed in the Waikoloa Villas, in the Village. Very nice area which has quite a few nice condo communities, most of which rent. No question, a golfing community. We have a relative that owns a real nice unit in Waikoloa Villas. But this time we rented our own, since we were there for a large wedding, a lot of friends also rented there for the occasion so we were able to get a good handle on the average quality of units for rent. On the average, a two bedroom is much larger, more kept up from a modern standpoint and probably cleaner than the average beach condo down on the lower levels of the island and a lot quieter. If you aren’t into golfing, which we aren’t, it is still pretty nice, and only 10 minute drive or so from some of the best sand beaches in Hawaii, Hapuna Beach for example, or a walk from interesting Turtle Bay. Also, the large Waikoloa Resort complex which includes its ultra lavish Hilton hotel and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott is just a 10 minute drive away. Very close as well are the ritzy Hapuna Beach Prince and the Mauna Kea Beach hotels. The village is located in a nice a quiet area on the lower south slopes of the mountains with plenty of area to hike in without getting overrun by crazy drivers. Still, a very large, quality and reasonable super market is in the village just a few minutes walk. Downsides are, a long drive to Kona because both of the distance and the horrible traffic situation before you get to Kona, (note: fortunately when traveling south from here you reach COSTCO just before the traffic gets bad and the airport is also not a traffic problem as it would be if you were heading north from Kona), pretty windy area at times but dryer and warmer than most areas in the Hawaiian islands, the two pool areas in the complex are nice but though clean, are not maintained near as well as you will find at condo complexes on the coast so amenities like the grills, hot tubs, swimming pools are cold or shut down for weeks on end. Their main concern is keeping the golf course operational; if you are not one of those, go suck. Would we stay there again? Probably not, because we aren’t golfers and like the beach side resort areas much more, unfortunately, the beach side resorts offer less condo room quality, comfort and quiet (but not pool. hot tub or grill, convenience and quality).
