“Pretty nice if you are a golf nut”

This was the second time we stayed in the Waikoloa Villas, in the Village. Very nice area which has quite a few nice condo communities, most of which rent. No question, a golfing community. We have a relative that owns a real nice unit in Waikoloa Villas. But this time we rented our own, since we were there for a large wedding, a lot of friends also rented there for the occasion so we were able to get a good handle on the average quality of units for rent. On the average, a two bedroom is much larger, more kept up from a modern standpoint and probably cleaner than the average beach condo down on the lower levels of the island and a lot quieter. If you aren’t into golfing, which we aren’t, it is still pretty nice, and only 10 minute drive or so from some of the best sand beaches in Hawaii, Hapuna Beach for example, or a walk from interesting Turtle Bay. Also, the large Waikoloa Resort complex which includes its ultra lavish Hilton hotel and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott is just a 10 minute drive away. Very close as well are the ritzy Hapuna Beach Prince and the Mauna Kea Beach hotels. The village is located in a nice a quiet area on the lower south slopes of the mountains with plenty of area to hike in without getting overrun by crazy drivers. Still, a very large, quality and reasonable super market is in the village just a few minutes walk. Downsides are, a long drive to Kona because both of the distance and the horrible traffic situation before you get to Kona, (note: fortunately when traveling south from here you reach COSTCO just before the traffic gets bad and the airport is also not a traffic problem as it would be if you were heading north from Kona), pretty windy area at times but dryer and warmer than most areas in the Hawaiian islands, the two pool areas in the complex are nice but though clean, are not maintained near as well as you will find at condo complexes on the coast so amenities like the grills, hot tubs, swimming pools are cold or shut down for weeks on end. Their main concern is keeping the golf course operational; if you are not one of those, go suck. Would we stay there again? Probably not, because we aren’t golfers and like the beach side resort areas much more, unfortunately, the beach side resorts offer less condo room quality, comfort and quiet (but not pool. hot tub or grill, convenience and quality).

  • Liked — Clean, quiet nice location and good value for the condo if you don't consier amenities like hot tub and pool and grill
  • Disliked — Didn't care about anybody except golfers, poor pool, grill and hot tub considerations overviews, and no on line service

“Very nice and covienient”

We came and stayed here in 2004 and were very happy. This is not a hotel and should be regarded as such. It is a condo and more like staying in your own apartment. We loved the breezes off the Lanai and the blue tile pool is great. If you are looking for crowds and happenings this is not the place for you. If you are looking for quiet, relaxing, away from the crowds getaway this is the place for you. My dad lived in these condo's for over 9 months and wouldnt stay anywhere else on the island again. It is a truly native experience and I wouldnt go back to Hawaii without staying in the villas.

  • Liked — Quiet amibience

“disgusting”

We stayed here and the place was a disaster. Stains galore on the couches and chairs. Tons of bugs all over the place.

place hasn't been updated in twenty years it looked like. bathroom cabinets were coming apart. food from last guests were left in the refrigerator (half eaten sandwich among other things). trash was never taken out before we got there.

  • Tips/Secrets — if you do book here, call in advance to arrange your arrival check in if coming in after hours.

“Quiet, peaceful, clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2005

We had a two bedroom, 2.5 bath condo across the street from the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The condo was spacious, the kitchen had everything we needed and there was also a washer/dryer. The master bedroom had a full size soaking tub and separate shower. The second bedroom had two twin size beds. The second bathroom had a separate shower and regular bathtub. All rooms were spacious and provided plenty of storage room. We were offered this place as an alternative to staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village across the street, and I'm glad we did. We did not use the pool or hot tub. We had no problems checking in in the late afternoon. There is an office near the front of the complex. Each condo has 1 private parking space right in front of the unit.

Make sure you book plenty of things to do in advance, as there really is not a lot to do here on the fly. The town of Kona is about 20 miles south. There is a Costco that came in handy for stocking up the kitchen.

I would recommend this place for people who are looking for peace and quiet. We had teenage boys with us and it was difficult to keep them entertained - boredom set it fairly fast.

“Great value for the price”

We stayed at the Waikoloa Villas Feb 12-19, 2005. Great time! We booked our condo through Abbey Vacation Rentals. A bit of a leap of faith since we had only corresponded with them via internet and email - but the arrangements worked out very well. Condo was clean and as pictured. Only disappointment was that the condo complex doesn't actually have a tennis court. You can walk across the street to the Marriott and use the one there for $10/hour...but I had thought that this was included. Complex is in a great location - walking distance to the Marriott, Hilton, and Kings Shops. Would definitely recommend as an alternative to a hotel!
