We recently spent a night at the Lokahi Lodge and were extremely pleased. Loved the intimacy, yet private rooms. We decided to forgo eating out and cooked some steaks there, had some wine, and enjoyed the setting. I think the other rooms were full, but we had friendly, but little, contact with people.
Easy location for visiting the volcano, only a few minutes away.
Beautiful hardwood carved furniture, lots of reading material, spacious common area.
since they had called this their "moderate" accommodation, I hadn't expected it to be so nice. Immaculately clean. We had the Makalapua room and bed was very comfortable, and the humidifier kept us comfy. Lots of logs at the fireplace too. Really had the sense of deep dedication and caring from the owners and staff. Highly recommend the $6 breakfast. We had to go to the main lodge for it, but was definitely worth it. Endless trays of fruit and fresh pastries, and a nice atmosphere.
If you plan to stay here and cook, shop before Volcano. Little market by the Kiawe Kitchen was VERY expensive. Kiawe Kitchen had good lunch fare.
Last suggestion - the Kileau Iki hike is long, but fun! You go through a small crater and lots f rain forest. Steep path at the end so should be in good condition.
