While traveling with another couple, my wife & I stayed two nights at the Kilauea Lodge's Pi'i Mauna House. This is a duplex house in a residential area about 5 minutes from the Lodge and at the edge of a golf course. We were entertained by wild turkeys and pheasants moving across the lawn. The duplex is several minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. Although the bedrooms and baths are small they are very clean. Breakfast at the Lodge was good. Bad - the buildings have no central heat and the owners provide a small portable heater that only partly works and is inadequate to warm up the rooms. The morning temperatures were 50 degrees and the rooms were about the same temperature when we got up. The best we could do was dress quickly & leave the rooms. The shower in the bath accomodates someone who is very short. I am 5' 10" and had to almost get down on my knees to wash my hair. Bottom line: this is a very rustic option for two couples near the National Park. We would not return.
