I've read the other reviews so I'll try and offer something new here. First, Ira's cottage was the perfect place for my wife and I to stay while in Volcano Village. We loved the scale (not too big, not too small), the seclusion, the setting, and all the little details that made staying there a pleasure. Our host Ira was there to greet us and tell us what we needed to know, but otherwise was "out of the way", which added to the peacefulness and seclusion. (We didn't feel pestered like some B&B hosts who feel obligated to chat about this and that and give travel advice etc. and you look at your watch and realize that your whole morning is spent!).
Ira had thought of everything ahead of time: The cottage was stocked with breakfast food, the kitchen had everything we needed to make basic meals; there were books, sunscreen, umbrellas, etc. We also appreciated how nice everything looked. (Well he's an artist!).
Couple things to consider: The door between the bathroom and bedroom is a light, sliding door, and there wasn't much bathroom privacy if you know what I mean. This place is perfect for 2 adults, maybe a little kid, but I can't imagine it being suitable for a large family. The parking spot for cottage guests is a short driveway on the side of the street. Our obnoxious, ridiculously-sized rental vehicle (Ford full size pu with ext. cab) did not fit too well in the driveway. We got it to fit by parking parallel to street instead. So big vehicle people beware! Lastly, by all means go to the Thai restaurant; it’s great!
