“Satisfactory”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

My wife and I stayed four nights in the Hale Kilauea unit at Volcano Village Lodge. My first impression when entering was this is extremely small (and it was). I was told it is the smallest unit at Volcano Village Lodge. First the good: Very clean, comfortable bed, situated in a beautiful environment; nice fireplace; good, low fat/low carb breakfasts; daily restocking of energy bars/yogurt; good DVD assortment for borrowing; decent Internet connection (very low connectivity, but satisfactory). Now the not so good: Very, very small room (particularly for the price); no (I mean no) drawers--there are hangars for storage but no drawers (we had to live out of our suitcases (and there was not much room for them); the breakfasts (although healthy) were uninspired.
I was really looking forward to staying in Hale Kilauea, but overall I was disappointed. The pictures are a bit deceiving. Although I listed a lot of positive things, the most important for my wife and me (space) was missing.

Room Tip: I suspect some of the more expensive rooms would be a better value.

Aloha and thank you for sharing your experience at the Lodge. We are happy to hear from you and find it unfortunate that you did not fully enjoy your Hale Kilauea room experience. We haven't had complaints about the lack of dresser space, but because of your comments we will be looking to replace the current Asian Style dresser with one that is more suitable for storage. As the pictures show it is a beautiful room with floor to ceiling windows on three sides of the room. The rain forest panorama of this room makes it one of the favorites for some of the guests. It is our smallest room, but in many ways the most romantic, especially waking up as the morning sun lights up the rain forest fauna. It is also closest to the hot tub. We hope if you return to Volcano you will try one of our other rooms at the Lodge as you so kindly noted that you liked what the Lodge has to offer to its travelers.

“Quiet and Secluded”

All-in-all this was a nice place to stay. The Lodge consists of about 5 or 6 separate buildings linked together by tropical rainforest pathways. Basically you have your own cabin/hut.

It was a great location within 5 minutes (drive) to the Volcano National Park.

This is a bed and breakfast, with an interesting twist. To allow privacy and people to be on their own schedules, breakfast is brought in to your room the night or afternoon before you eat it, and you have a toaster oven, microwave, and mini-fridge in your room to basically fix it for yourself when you want to eat. There was an assortment of snacks too . . . microwave popcorn, granola bars, etc . . .

The closest restaurant is about 5 minutes drive. . . it is a very small town, so there were three, maybe four restaurants in the vacinity.

There is a TV and DVD player in each room. No TV/Cable/Satellite, but an assortment of DVD's to choose from at the main house. There is also an outdoor hot tub at the main house that is shared by all the cabins.

A nice touch is that each room comes equipped with binoculars, flashlights, and umbrellas for use during your stay. Since this is the rainy side of the island, you WILL use the umbrellas, and we did take the binoculars and flashlights with us when we toured the lava tubes and Volcano National Park. The flashlights also came in handy at night getting around the Lodge, as the pathways are very lush and dark at night.

“Mauna Kea cabin fantastic!”

Our only mistake was only booking one night here. We were greeted and settled in by a charming Vietnamese woman who made our stay perfect. We enjoyed the peace and solitude after having been in a huge beach front hotel for the previous 3 days. Breakfast was prepared in advance, the table was set, and all we did was heat a nice quiche in the microwave. A wagon was provided to get out stuff to Mauna Kea. All in all, a real treat; we can't think of one negative aspect of this place that is so convenient to the Park. Sondra and Geoff

“Wonderful Lodging near Volcanoes Natl Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Stayed here largely on Trip Advisor reviews and was not disappointed. The Mauna Kea room was great - large, very nicely furnished, fireplace, many windows surrounded by the rain forest. Really a beautiful, secluded spot and only minutes away from Volcanoes Natl Park. Only minor problem was that the bathroom adjoined the bathroom of another unit and there was minimal soundproofing. You could hear the opening of a zipper next door. But all in all a terrific place to stay.

Thank you very much for picking Volcano Village Lodge during your vacation on the Big Island. We appreciate your comments and are glad that you had an enjoyable time at our unique rainforest lodge only minutes away from the famous Volcano National Park. When we read about the sound proofing issue we decided to give it immediate attention. We hope the changes that we have made will make it better for future guests. Again, we appreciate your visiting our lodge.

“Cabin in the Rainforest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We just returned after hiking the volcano and staying 3 nights in the Mauna Loa room. The place is better in person than in the pictures - furniture arranged differently. It is a large luxury log cabin, great bathroom. Wood everywhere, nice books and artwork. Spotless. Room heated up nicely (almost too much) on the cold nights. Lots of goodies to munch on and a good fridge. Lots of quiche and wonderful fruit. Chelsea was terrific.

Only thing to consider - this room has lots of floor-to-ceiling windows with solar shades. It lets you look out, but anyone walking by could also see in. This place is small and private, so no one walks by, even on the way to reception, but I found it a little inhibiting and wore a robe the whole time. Don't be dettered from staying here, but it may be a but surprising. I guess it is the only way to bring the beautiful outside in. I think other cabins have more of a sense of privacy.

Loved Gino the cat.
