“Liked my stay here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I was a little apprehensive of booking a place here, however, none of my fears were realised.

It is a way away from other places, down near the end of the road of the village, if it can even be called that. However, if you want to visit the Volcanoes National Park, I'd stay in this area.

We stayed on the top floor of the main building. You have to remove your shoes before you enter.

The room was large and the bathroom was tiny in comparison. The windows are large, letting in a lot of natural light and there are loads of trees all around. Floors are wooden. There was even a dining table in the room with a couch. The room was very clean, felt clean, felt spacious. I could have been holed up there the whole week reading a book, I think.

I did not use the hot tub outside.

Rain water is collected for the bath, which I thought was very cool.

Breakfast is very basic, but enough to get the day started.

“Felt a bit micromanaged”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Great location: a short distance to Volcanoes National Park. And not difficult to find (regardless of the inn's website warning), Lovely grounds with lots of vegetation. Extremely clean.

Downsides:
Notes and labels everywhere telling you what to do and how to do it. It quickly became annoying and very "big brother" like. The breakfast seemed an afterthought. It consisted of a muffin and incredibly strong bad coffee.

When we visit this part of the island again, we will stay somewhere else. We just didn't feel comfortable or welcome.

“Great location, great room, great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

This hotel is sort of like a bed and breakfast, not like a full service hotel. There is no daily maid service. They have several rooms, not a lot. But the rooms are very nice and clean and beautiful because they have a lot of wood. Some feel spacious because of the big windows. And they are very clean. This was my favorite hotel room on my vacation to Hawaii. With the low price, and the close location to the park, the Volcano Inn is a no-brainer.

Because of the wood, and the single pane glass windows, dew on the inside of the windows is a problem, so the inn insists that you run the dehumidifier in the room. That is a fair request and it will increase guest comfort in the room, too. The only problem is that the dehumidifier is loud and it will cycle on and off all night. It will disturb sleep for some people.

The rooms don't have telephones. There is no facial tissue provided in the bathroom and only body wash is provided, so if you prefer bar soap, bring your own. The shampoo is not very good, so you might want to bring your own as well.

They do have wireless internet that even uses WPA security, a nice surprise. Cable TV and a DVD player with some books and movies provided.

There is an eating area and muffins and coffee are provided in the morning (self serve). There is a small communal refrigerator and microwave in the eating area.

One weird thing is that you have to remove your shoes before entering the building. There is a shoe rack at the entrance. Although annoying, this policy certainly helps cleanliness inside since a lot of guests are coming from muddy trails inside the volcanoes NP. (only five minutes away).

“So much nicer than expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

For the price, it was almost unbelievable what a great place this was. Perfectly situated for adventures in Volcanos National Park, it was like staying at grandma's house (with more amenities!) Every morning there were yummy muffins and coffee and the owner said that he had an ad out for someone to come in and do more cooking, which would be great, because there is a lovely large common area and an eating area with tables overlooking the beautiful grounds. We stayed in the Pu'u O'o room which even had its own driveway, although parking for all the units was only about 5 steps from the building. The furniture and decor were cozy, and the place was super clean, even the fact that the floors were cork or nice hardwood made it seem cleaner than the sketchy carpet you get in some hotel rooms. You can tell that the owners take pride in their place, and they take great care to keep it in wonderful shape for their guests, with nice quilts, extra blankets and even a personal thermostat and dehumidifier. Free wi-fi in the rooms (and a computer upstairs that guests could use if they didn't have their own) was another added bonus. The only sort of odd thing were the large mirrors attached to the ceiling and the wall beside the bed which made playing card games in bed a bit difficult!

“Charming”

Spent two nights at the Volcano Inn (January 11 & 12) and found it charming. Room was very clean, linens/towels soft and homey. Good coffee and yummy muffins each morning. Close to Volcano Park. Would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet place with quick access to volcanos. Also, only place in my two week trip to hawaii that had free wifi in my room!
