“wildly overpriced & rude hosts”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

The proprietors have attitude issues that made for an unpleasant stay. The inn's website does not clearly indicate there's a $25 extra per person charge for more guests than two. That brought the per-night cost to $190 -- $215 with tax included, The hosts would not agree to eliminate the extra charge, nor would they consent to our request to shorten our stay from the two nights reserved to just one. Because a debit card was used for the booking, we had no recourse. The total cost of nearly $430 for two nights would have been exorbitant even if the hosts were accommodating. Breakfast can charitably be described as modest; nothing cooked is offered, and one of the main "dishes" is boxed cereal. You can do a lot better than Tara Firma when you visit spectacular Volcanoes National Park.

“our first time at a B&B, good for what it is, but not ideal for family travel”

We were last minute travelers and ended up here because it was the only lodging with availability on Expedia when we booked our trip. Our host Fritz was friendly and made us feel comfortable. We had the Orchid Suite which has its own private bathroom, but the other suite room is a bed in an open air loft above the kitchen, so whover sleeps there will hear the hosts when they awake at 4:15AM and start preparing coffee and such. We liked the location - only a few minutes from Volcano National Park and close to good restaurants in Volcano Village (Kiawe Kitchen, Lava Rock Cafe). The light breakfasts prepared by our hosts were perfect for us, fresh fruit, breads, juice, etc. Our kids found it odd that we sat down to eat with strangers (other guests) at breakfast. I would not reccommend this lodging for a family traveling with children, but would be fine for a couple that wants a quiet place to stay near the park.

“If we come back to Big Island, we're staying HERE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2009

Fritz and Kate absoluely bent over backwards for us. They had a "buffet" available 24/7 with the makings for coffee, tea, oatmeal, popcorn...even beer and coke in the fridge! They even offered (and did) our laundry for us while we were out sightseeing.

Breakfast consisted of beautiful tropical fruit and warm breads (English muffins, biscuits,),juice, and coffee.

The town of Volcano is so unique and this B&B is perfect!

A great B&B on a lovely island. If youre looking for somewhere to stay in this area then this is ideal. We were made very welcome and enjoyed our stay.

“Very convenient location, magnificent service, very, very clean.”

My girlfriend and I arrived on the big Island over one hour late (thank you Hawaiian Airlines). The staff at Tara Firma were extremely accommodating and understanding, even though we got there fairly late on a Friday night. We had the orchid suite, and both of us remarked on how absolutely spotless the room and bathroom were. Even my girlfriend was impressed, and that's saying quite a lot, because she is an extreme neat freak (let me give you an idea-she actually makes the bed at hotels! I don't even make my bed at home).

After our initial check-in, we didn't see anybody during our stay-it was if we had the place to ourselves. Breakfast was magnificent, and I have to admit I ate everything in sight, muffins, oatmeal, cereal, fruit. Of course my girlfriend insisted on doing the dishes, even though we didn't have to.

The inn is less than a five-minute drive from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park which of course is absolutely incredible.

If we ever return to the Big Island, we will definitely be staying at the Tara Firma Inn again. We highly recommend it.
