“Hard to shower with no water”

Nice web site, the reality is a little different. Good proximity to park but a little tricky to find. Get there before dark. Many many stairs to access house and Orchid Suite. Hospitality was Ok but minimal. We woke to find there was no water due to a broken water pump: no showers, no brushed teeth, no working toilet. We had to track the hosts down to find out what was going on. Apologies, but no offer of any reduction of the $213 bill for the three of us.
We expected a better breakfast at a B and B other than store bought bread and boxed cereal.
Clean, but worn around the edges.
On a positive note, there was a nice fire waiting for us in the morning ( probably to make up for no water) and a lush view into the tropical surroundings.

“Enjoyable stay at the Tara Firma Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

The Tara Firma Inn, if you can find the cozy B&B in the enchanted rainforest, is a good choice to stay on your way to explore the Volcanoes National Park. The host was friendly and very helpful. He kept the fire going in the stove, which was nice to dry our clothes, after a rainy-day hike in the park. The coffee was ready early in the morning, and the light breakfast with the wonderful fruit was just right for a new day of adventure.

“Very Unique and Great Location”

We stayed here on a last minute family vacation. Supreme location to Volcano Park and some great restaurants in Volcano. We even had the unique experience of seeing a chameleon from our breakfast table. We watched this little guy for over an hour. The owners are super nice and the rooms are cozy. Very affordable for this town where most places are pretty expensive. Definitely would recommend.

“wildly overpriced & rude hosts”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

The proprietors have attitude issues that made for an unpleasant stay. The inn's website does not clearly indicate there's a $25 extra per person charge for more guests than two. That brought the per-night cost to $190 -- $215 with tax included, The hosts would not agree to eliminate the extra charge, nor would they consent to our request to shorten our stay from the two nights reserved to just one. Because a debit card was used for the booking, we had no recourse. The total cost of nearly $430 for two nights would have been exorbitant even if the hosts were accommodating. Breakfast can charitably be described as modest; nothing cooked is offered, and one of the main "dishes" is boxed cereal. You can do a lot better than Tara Firma when you visit spectacular Volcanoes National Park.

“our first time at a B&B, good for what it is, but not ideal for family travel”

We were last minute travelers and ended up here because it was the only lodging with availability on Expedia when we booked our trip. Our host Fritz was friendly and made us feel comfortable. We had the Orchid Suite which has its own private bathroom, but the other suite room is a bed in an open air loft above the kitchen, so whover sleeps there will hear the hosts when they awake at 4:15AM and start preparing coffee and such. We liked the location - only a few minutes from Volcano National Park and close to good restaurants in Volcano Village (Kiawe Kitchen, Lava Rock Cafe). The light breakfasts prepared by our hosts were perfect for us, fresh fruit, breads, juice, etc. Our kids found it odd that we sat down to eat with strangers (other guests) at breakfast. I would not reccommend this lodging for a family traveling with children, but would be fine for a couple that wants a quiet place to stay near the park.
