“Haunani House Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2005

Stayed at the Haunani House (Hale Haunani) in Volcano Village for 2 nights at the end of a weeks stay on Oahu and the Big Island. We were lucky to have 3 wonderful accomodations during our trip (all due to positive TA reviews). This very comfortable and cozy house in a residential area is about 2 miles from the Volcanoes National Park entrance, which was our destination after staying in the Kohala area. The area is rain forest and at about 4000 feet altitude, so it can be cool and rainy. The house has a nice gas stove in the living area that warms the whole house. The furnishings are very pleasant, and the place is SPOTLESS (!!!) with three lovely bedrooms that have very comfortable beds with comforters and great pillows. One bedroom has its own bath with shower. The other bath is large with a jacuzzi tub (!) which was used every night (great after hiking all day). The kitchen was open with the living area which made for nice conversation while making dinner. The yard is filled with tropical plants and pine trees. Todd, the owner, lives next door and was cheerful and accomodating. Reservation required a $100 deposit (personal check) and was $160/night plus tax for 3 people (pay by cash or check). Volcano Village is small, and we did not eat out while there, but hear that the Lodge has great food. The park is fascinating and definitely worth the visit. Mahalo!

“Nice, but overpriced.”

We stayed at the Maid's Quarters for a couple of nights after having read the other reviews on tripadvisor.com.
This truly is a nice place. All the advantages were described in detail by the previous reviewers: the hot tub, no other tourists, proximity to the national park...
But there are two things we were not so happy about. First, the Maid's Quarters is very close to the host's house. Thus, you don't have complete privacy. Second, we expected a little more modern interior with furniture that fits to each other. After all, about $ 170 / night is a lot of money for a place in the middle of nowhere...

The Maid's Quarters price in 2009 is $130/night. The German's who wrote this review must have been confused with the conversion rate. In 2005 when the review was written, the price of The Maid's Quarters was $115/night.

“Haunani House Was Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2004

Our family of four stayed April 2-4, 2004 at Haunani House and it was wonderful!! Absolutely perfect! We wanted to move the whole house and everything in it to our home state and live in it! The decor is fabulous. Very upscale. The owners are obviously very artistic.
Everything seems brand new. The house is really spacious. The rooms are even bigger than they seem on the website. Lots of closets and storage.
I haven't seen a place so clean since I was in Austria years ago. There were fresh Hawaiian flowers on the table. Everything you could imagine needing was there. Even had coffee. The yard was nice and private. The owner was very nice and helpful.

“Loved it”

We stayed for 5 nights in the Maid's Quarters in May 2003 and had a wonderful time. This is a renovated one-bedroom cabin with its own outdoor Jacuzzi that has been decorated with style and grace. It's just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so it's easy to visit the park but have meals at the cabin, or go out to eat in one of the restaurants in Volcano village. Todd and family make great hosts. The price is right, no complaints (except the high cost of food in Volcano stores). We'd come back in a heartbeat.

“Volcano Hideaways : Were erupting with raves!”

We stayed at the Haunani House in Volcano village and loved it! Its no ordinary place: Its a bright, cheerful, comfortable place to hide- in complete privacy and spaciousness - surrounded by a garden, with woods on one side and a fence that hides you from the neighboring house on the other. Its very creative- no hiding that! Each room comes in a different shade of color and style - down to the little details. Theres one Japanese room- with a bed thats both soft and firm- if you have a sensitive back- try that bed-- your back will thank you in the morning. Youll find lots of happy surprises hiding around the house: e.g. art in the bath tiles, aloha shirt- like pot holders the national Geographic magazines issue about the Island- big soft toy cat and dog your kids would love to find. Clearly this house was made with a tasteful eye, a thoughtful mind and a caring hand. Its very clean & fresh, and conveniently located minutes from the Volcano National Park. We came home for lunch and supper from the park- it was that simple. And we enjoyed alternating between roughing it hiking in the park- and this comfortable home with the Jacuzzi, fireplace, TV VCR, - and soft soft blanketsThe owner was friendly and helpful. It was Joy to hide in the Volcano Hideaways. We live half way around the world away- and still hope to come there again some day
