My husband and I wanted a place to stay at for a couple days that was close to Volcano National Park and we didn't want to stay at a typical B & B or hotel. Hale Anuhea was the perfect choice. Only four miles or so from the park and the house was a very comfortable place to stay. For the price that we normally would pay for a hotel room, we got a house with a garage and washer and dryer. The garage was nice to have when there was a rain shower.
The gas fireplaces heated up the house nicely when there a slight chill in the air. The beds were very comfortable. While we didn't use the kitchen much, it was well stocked with utensils and cookware.
One nice touch while we were there was that the house was decorated for the holidays. I loved sitting out on the wrap around porch in the evening with the Christmas lights on. It was quiet and you didn't hear the neighbors. There was a nice sized flat screen tv inside, dvds, and books about Hawaiian birds, flowers and trees, the volcanoes, and other sites to see.
Joan was a wonderful host. She was very personable and we enjoyed talking with her over the amazing breakfasts for the guests that she had ready at her house in the mornings. While it isn't a "cooked to order" breakfast, she would start off with fruit and then an egg dish (poached eggs/scrambled), sausage, homemade whipped cream, fresh coffee, juice, and more. The french toast she made one morning was the best.
