“All the comforts of home and more.”

My husband and I wanted a place to stay at for a couple days that was close to Volcano National Park and we didn't want to stay at a typical B & B or hotel. Hale Anuhea was the perfect choice. Only four miles or so from the park and the house was a very comfortable place to stay. For the price that we normally would pay for a hotel room, we got a house with a garage and washer and dryer. The garage was nice to have when there was a rain shower.

The gas fireplaces heated up the house nicely when there a slight chill in the air. The beds were very comfortable. While we didn't use the kitchen much, it was well stocked with utensils and cookware.

One nice touch while we were there was that the house was decorated for the holidays. I loved sitting out on the wrap around porch in the evening with the Christmas lights on. It was quiet and you didn't hear the neighbors. There was a nice sized flat screen tv inside, dvds, and books about Hawaiian birds, flowers and trees, the volcanoes, and other sites to see.

Joan was a wonderful host. She was very personable and we enjoyed talking with her over the amazing breakfasts for the guests that she had ready at her house in the mornings. While it isn't a "cooked to order" breakfast, she would start off with fruit and then an egg dish (poached eggs/scrambled), sausage, homemade whipped cream, fresh coffee, juice, and more. The french toast she made one morning was the best.

“graet breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2010

Joan was a fabulous friendly host with great advice about where to go. We followed this advice and got to see both the glowing lava in the crater at volcano, and also went to Puna and observed lava flowing directly into the sea-although I supposeb we did break a few rules in crossing the lava fields!
Great homemade breakfast.

“Feeling at home at the perfect location near the volcano.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2010

My husband, 2.5 year old son and I recently returned from an amazing trip to Hawaii which included a 3 night stay at Hale Koa Nani a vacation rental house run through the Country Goose Bed and Breakfast. This was the perfect way of having the comforts and feeling of home in a location which allowed for us to explore the volcano with ease and enjoyment. The breakfasts at the Country Goose were personally attended to and made by Joan who is truly a wonderful and most knowledgeable woman. We looked forward every morning to having a great meal and learning from her where to explore in and around the volcano. We would recommend Hale Koa Nani and by extension the Country Goose without hesitation.

“Perfect one night stay at Hale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

We stayed one night at Volcano (but wished we have stayed longer). We need an accommodation in Volcano (or Hilo) for one night only, and our options were quite limited, since most places would require a 2-night stay. In addition, we were traveling with young kids (4 and 7), so either we find a large room to fit us all, or book two rooms. In addition, kids would pay extra, so the costs would be higher anyway. I did an extensive research on all accommodations in the area, checking the ones listed at TA. Short of staying in a hotel in Hilo (which is often discouraged - check the TA forums for BI for opinions), we found that Country Goose would best match our needs. We would pay for a 2-bedroom cottage a rate very similar to what we would pay for 2 rooms in a B&B, or even a large room with the charges for additional guests. We called to book the reservation, made by a very nice lady called Joan. We booked the Hale Anueha, a 2-bedroom, 2 bath (one bathroom is in the garage, though) cottage with full kitchen, Jacuzzi in the master bath, a lanai, and an attached garage operated by remote control.

In addition, we were treated with a delicious breakfast that Joan prepares herself every morning. Let me see: fruits, juice, toast, poached eggs, French Toast, sausage, coffee. Joan serves the breakfast at the main office. The cabins are spread through area. Ours was simply a very short walk.

The cabin is very comfortable and fully loaded. There are some bottle of waters. There are some condiments in the fridge, not sure if left by Joan or the previous guests. There is also a spicy rack. There are three flat screen tvs, and two queen beds in each room. In addition, there are some those foldable mattresses that you buy in Costco if you have more than 4 sleeping guests. The garage is attached and operated by remote control. We brought some takeout that we bought in Hilo, so simply had to warm it up for dinner.

The Country Goose is about 5 minutes drive from VNP (Volcano National Park) - a great plus because we wanted to see the red glow at the Jaggar Museum before dinner. I would say it is about 3 miles from the VNP gate, and one mile from Volcano village.

We spent only one night, but we enjoyed the stay very much, so much that I promised Joan that I would talk about it for friends and write a nice review of her property for TripAdvisor (she didn't ask for that, I regularly write TA reviews anyway).

“Hale Iki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

Hello !!
Hale iki was a great place! We enjoyed the forest especially when you go to bed and you hear the sounds of the forest and the rain ! It was wonderful to have windows in front and in back of our bed. You wake up in a nice scenic view !
The two person windows all around bath was gorgeous. Then again, its an unforgettable experience because its like taking your bath or your shower amongst the trees of the forest !" coool !
Accessory wise, they have nice books of Hawaii (travelers books) that we enjoyed reading on the patio and in front of the fireplace. THey have nice warm blankets to warm yourself around when you are out or in. Bug wise, we had brought some mosquito repellent but they had a couple of bottles in the pharmacy. We didnt spend much time outside of the cottage since we had activities planned during the day, so we got 2-3 bug bites from getting out of the car to the cottage. Thats it thats all !

The breakfasts at the COuntry goose were amazing. You cant expect more than we had ; lots of fruits, eggs, waffles, pancakes, homemade whip, jam, etc. It was great ! Joan has a lot of hospitality and she recommended us some activities, better routes to travel on, tips on activities, etc. Thanks again to you !

The things you have to think of when you settle in hale iki is that you have to go to the grocery store before you arrive in volcano village. The closest grocery store is about 40 minutes away so 1h20 round trip.(in hilo) The other thing, we would have like to have a game or two to play ; like a board game or a card game. After a long day in the sun, you come back quite tired !!! Keeping yourself awake is a challenge, so playing a game or two, can keep yourself awake for a bit and not go to bed a 6:00 p.m. !!! If you like the forest, go for it. It is a very comfortable private place. The driveway is hiding between the trees that are on the main street. So you get to walk onto a nice little pathway until you reach your cottage. Once in a while, you hear the neighbors or the cars driving on the main street, but thats it. After that, you only hear the rainforest !!!!
Have a good day.
