My wife and I recently spent 4 nights here at cottage 44 which is the converted water cistern tank. After reading some of the past reviews, we had high expectations. We were also coming from another B&B on the island were we gave it an outstanding review, so 44 was going to be hard to live up to thoughts. The grounds of the B&B are lovely and the cottage looks unique and cozy from the outside. Upon entering, the first thing that we noticed was the paint scheme. Pink painted walls, brown real wood paneling, brown painted floors, yellow trim, and a yellow ceiling in the bedroom (all clashed). Also, the table with the painted "New England" fishing boat, the African elephant print on the wall and the glass seashell scone shade on the wall light leading to the bedroom, didn't appear to work well together. Sorry, this is just our opinion. The bedroom area seemed to be missing a wall picture (saw the screw still in the wall). The cottage was clean, but items such as the curtains, appeared to be nearing their replacement age. There also didn't seem to be a "higher end" feel to the cottage. You were only given 2 napkins with each breakfast, and had 2 glasses, plates, etc in the kitchen. The juice provided each morning is in a plastic container, again, nothing wrong with that, but not higher end for the price you're paying. The fireplace is great and heats up the cottage nicely and is two sided (living area and bedroom). The water takes awhile to get hot and you need to turn the bathroom sink single faucet to the right (opposite of normal) for hot water (had to go to the office to find that out). The B&B is in a great location from the entrance to the National Park and a short drive to Volcano village. Finally, it rained 2 nights we were there, and with the tin roof, it can be very loud in the cottage. It had potential.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us with your feedback. It was a pleasure to host you and your wife last month. We’re glad you liked our gorgeous, gardened estate and convenient location near to the Volcano National Park. However, we’re sorry to hear you were less than impressed with Cottage 44. We understand that everyone has a different taste, and we’re sorry if the interior of the cottage did not live up to your expectations. Each of the historic structures on our property is indeed unique and cozy, and the interior of each has developed in the same vein. Though expertly restored and renovated, they are not necessarily luxurious. Cottage 44 still retains a quaint, rustic quality that we’ve complemented with mahogany wainscoting, vintage lighting from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and other elements— much like you might populate a second home with items you love and those you’ve acquired through travel. Check out www.ohiadesign.com We won a design award for "On Tapa Hill". We hope you enjoyed your daily breakfast of homemade bread, seasonal fruit and fresh coffee, and that you had fun exploring our part of the Island. Also, thank you for giving future visitors a heads-up about the rise in elevation and drop in temperature. You’re right that, here in the forest, it is 10-20 degrees cooler than the coast! The double-sided fireplace certainly comes in handy. Thank you again for your review. If you return to Volcano, we hope to welcome you both back to Hale Ohia and make a much better impression.
All the best,
