We've been taking a large group to the big island for the past 15 years, and the Pahala Plantation Cottages are great for our needs. We travel all around the island, from Kailua Kona to Volcanoes National Park to Hilo and all the way up the Hamakua coast. If you are looking for lots of beach and a day or two at Volcanoes/Hilo, then I'd recommend staying at or near one of the resorts in Kona. (The island is small, but roads are curvy and the speed limits are lower than on the mainland.)
The Plantation House is huge--seven bedrooms, a huge kitchen with all of the cooking gear you'll need, and lots of places to get away from the group. The dining room, living room, music room, and sitting room provide spaces for your big group to hang out, not to mention the wrap around lanai with plenty of seating for outside dining. Our group is always enjoying their time in the house, often playing and singing at the grand piano.
If you don't need such a big place, there are lots of other options. The Cottages are really a set of properties located around the sleepy town of Pahala. We have stayed in quite a few of them, including the Plantation House, Maile House, Market House, and Kamani Cottages.
There's a lot to like about the Plantation Cottages. The owner is very attentive and helpful, and the folks here have always striven to resolve any issues. On the other hand, some of the rooms have not been updated in decades, some of the electrical outlets don't work, and the towels don't match. These are not big problems for most people at a vacation rental, but might be for some.
The other thing to note is that Pahala is in the middle of nowhere. The town has a market that usually is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (cash only) and closed on Sunday. There is a gas station and a hospital. That is pretty much all of the commercial interest in town.Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance is about a 45 minute drive north, and Naalehu (restaurants, bakery, bigger market) is the nearest town to the south. The beautiful Punaluu black sand beach is about a 10 minute drive. But, if you are trying to "get away from it all", you cannot get much farther.
