“The Plantation House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

It was so great to be able to stay in such a historic house in Pahala, HI. My crew and I stayed there for 2 weeks and lived like one big happy family. The local townspeople and Hawaiians in general are so hospitable and couldn't do enough for us. We, as always, look forward to another stay with the colourful people of the Big Island, HI.

“Beautiful Decorated Market House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

This is a beautiful house that was built in the 1930's in the sleepy town of Pahala. It used to be a store of some kind so the living/dinning room is open and spacious. The rooms are exquisitely decorated with antiques from Sugarcane's glory days. It's a fantastic place to stay if you want to have a quiet holiday or be close to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We really enjoyed ourselves here.

Thank you for the compliments and for reviewing us on TripAdvisor. Your beautiful photos indicate you stayed at our "Market House" which indeed used to be a store many many years ago. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again in the future!

May the new year bring you cheer!

“Peaceful stay minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

What a great find! At the recommendation of a friend, we booked the Market Cottage in Pahala and boy are we glad we did as the main entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park sits just 20 minutes away.

The Market Cottage was not listed on the website, but sounded interesting. It was the meat market for the town, and has been thoughtfully renovated. Cable TV, local phone, and wireless WiFi are included. There is a full kitchen, a peaceful and large balcony, two full bathrooms (one with a tub), and three bedrooms (two queens and one with two twins). There are several interesting antique pieces around the cottage, along with some vintage art. The cottage had plenty of space and could easily sleep 6.

It was an extremely relaxing and peaceful stay. It was nice to be able to come and go as we pleased, and have the kitchen available. In addition to being very convenient to the Park, the rest of the south end of Hawaii Island was also easily accessed from here. We went down to south point and saw the green sand beach, and out to Punaluu black sand beach to see the turtles.

Overall, this was a great stay. One of the best things was leaving the Park in the late afternoon in the cold and rain that seems pretty typical to that area, and knowing that the only thing cold in Pahala was the wine in our fridge! We can't wait to stay here again

“Fantastic getaway, perfect location for those who really want to get to know Hawaii”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

I loved this place! It was my first time to Hawaii and I was traveling solo. The manager, Julia, was wonderfully accommodating and friendly. It was an ideal location to meet the locals, see the Punalu`u black sand beaches (where I was lucky enough to see 4 sea turtles resting on the beach), Volcanoes National Park (Kilauea and Kahuku sides), South Point, and of course the exquisitely beautiful coffee farms surrounded by rain forest! I had my meals catered by the staff as well, which was excellent! All grown locally and delicious! Furthermore, the interior decorating is beautifully done - tasteful and comfortable.
There are several cottages - I inquired for future reference - and a very large house often used for weddings, reunions, and big family/friend rentals. I loved it so much that I extended my stay to several weeks!! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone - it's beautiful, cost-effective, friendly and in a great location!
Especially wonderful because it is not one of those terribly expensive tourist trapping resorts that never let you get to know the real Hawaii - this place has class, culture and is surrounded by pristine beaches and rain forests! STYLISH ECO-TOURISM with a historic influence. I give it two thumbs up!

“superb, tranquil hawaiian experience!”

We ended up staying almost 2 weeks, because we really loved it here. the owner, a great woman named Julia and a local community worker, manages about 14 great places to stay in Pahala, all great old plantation cottages or rooms in the big plantation house. everything is decorated with much integrity and love, and the stay comes with a lot of extra's; free laundry, free local telephone use, free internet, and spacious, clean and charming atmosphere, set in lovely nature.
Also, all priceranges are possible as we found out; we stayed at a 2 bedroom cottage with 2 veranda's and fully furnished kitchen for only 95 a night, that is on hawaii a real bargain!
she also has bigger places and luxury rooms in the plantation house for more, and she also caters for groups in the big house, incl food and stuff.
a real hawaiian experience in style is what you get; we definitely will return and hopefully if you go you enjoy it as much as we.
greetings, Caroline & Jerry
