The Hobbit House is true to its name! Perched way up in the starry skies of Naalehu on the South Side of the Big Island you have more privacy than you could ever imagine. You are the ONLY guests of Bill and Darlene - your energetic, innovative and highly creative hosts... ask them about thier Mac Nut Sorting invention, the windmills at South Point, the 1st generation thru current solar panals that fully power the Hobbit House, ANYTHING and you will get an enthusiastic tale! If you want a few days or a week of complete solitude, this is it. Perfect for a writing retreat or simply a quiet place to rest after a day 4 wheeling and exploring the southern tip of the island - rugged landscape, sky for days, jagged cliffs.... you name it. Go. Enjoy.

This is an amazing, unique B&B. The house was built by the owners, who operate the B&B. It is a unique, creative building. For example, the beams on the porches are made from branching tree-trunks, few of teh windows are square. Location is breautiful, overlooking mointains, with a view out to the sea. Hosts were gracious and friendly, and breakfast was yummy (and served outside, with a view - see photo). There is only one oaccomodation - essentially a full 1-bedroom apartment, with kitchen, dining area and living room. the drive up IS a little trickty, and a 4-WD vehicle helps. (We didn't have one but did OK.)

You’d be surprised, but even nowadays there are places that are unique, avoid mainstream and still remain unpolished by soles of millions of tourists. Even more surprisingly – not in the moon, just on top of a beautiful hill, and in the middle of everything in the Big Island of Hawaii. If you climb up (4x4 helps, it’d be really weird to have a paved road up there) – you enter another world where hobbits, fairies and birds have their shelter. It took artistic imagination and creativity of the hosts, Darlene and Bill, to fit all this into a great location – the property is large and secluded, you won’t feel that neighbors, roads and other such things are anywhere close… just quiet trees, the ocean and gorgeous stars at nights.
The house lives on solar and wind power (the kitchen works just fine, hot water runs, no worries about that) which, to us, matches exactly the spirit of the place. Although, the house is big, Darlene and Bill accommodate only one party of guests at a time. This leaves you with a suite that is also a piece of haute design, besides, it is very spacious (you get your own kitchen, a big dinning room with ocean/stars view, a bedroom and a giant bathroom with the best views we ever saw) and it is separated from the main unit, so you feel like living in your own hobbit house. In the morning, you have a plentiful breakfast with a good portion of fruits awaiting you in the porch. Ultimately, there comes the dilemma: to stay all day at home, sitting in the porch, bathing in the tub… or to go out.
If you finally decide to go out – every way you drive is worth the time – from beautiful beaches (some of them are as unique and hidden as the house) to the volcano park. Close-by village, dirty roads and black sand beaches (also there is a green one nearby) are to start from (get 4x4 though). A bit more driving leads you to the Captain Cook point (best snorkeling) or to volcano hikes… Just don’t forget to ask your hosts (Darlene or Bill) before you go. They have more information than any book you can get around there.
When, after a long day, you drive up the magic hill, you feel back home. There is and an atmosphere of easiness and relaxation in this house. This indeed is a special and unforgettable place.

Hobbit House can only be described by it's name! It is truly a magnificent place to stay if you want to be away from it all. You couldn't ask for better hosts than Darlene and Bill who take the best care you can imagine of you while you visit. They made us feel right at home and gave us great advice as to where to spend our time.
Breakfast was better than any five star hotel with views to die for.
Only drawback is it is a short drive to nearest town but for a few days is the ideal place to go when visiting the Big Island
