Me and my husband visited Hawaii this past December. We wanted to start our trip with visiting Volcanos of the Big Island, as this is number one attraction ( rightfully so!!!) as you can't experience live volcano anywhere else in the World. The Hobbit House was in ideal location for that, as we didn't want to be too far or too close ( I am a chicken when it comes to gases, etc) It was about 40 min driving which was perfect. It was also in a close proximity to Place of Refuge and of course black and green beach ( also a must see) and of course Lava Tubes, and even famous Kona Coffee Farms (Lion's Head was my favourite, by the way - small, simple and friendly owners, best priced Kona coffee etc. )
The House and it's grounds absolutely magical, hidden away and yet not far from the main road. The whole adventure starts with a crazy drive/road leading up to the house. But if you do it during the day the very first time and have 4x4- it's a piece of cake! The very first time we were a little freaked out driving up because we never drove 4x4 other then on Toronto HWYs, but after the first time we would make the drive day and night and it seemed very easy. Just get directions from hosts. There are 2 restaurants close by ( the only 2 restaurants (very basic) in that area- keep in mind it is a very secluded part of the island, and that's the beauty of it)
The house itself was stunning! Very special, a true craftmanship and a piece of art-it's like you are in a different world, a fairy tale, when you there - you half expecting the little hobbits or dwarfs to show up. The views are fantastic! The hosts were very friendly and helpful in terms of choosing activities for the day.
The house was huge, very clean, full custom kitchen, amazing views... I did not expect such a wonderful place for such a reasonable price, that's for sure. We stayed at 3 other places during our visit in Big Island and Maui including big resorts like Wailea and Hilton ( which were also much more expensive), but this place was still my favourite by far! It was sooo special, sooo Big Island Hawaii, I don't think it get's any better then that. I would recommend to any travellers who want something out of the ordinary, would be perfect for Honey mooners! I also want to mention here how amazing the volcano visits were- and make sure visit them at night as well! That's when the Caldera is most stunning! Anyways, we hope to be back to the Hobbit House before too long!
