“An expensive mistake”

I started researching and booking our Hawaiian adventure last summer. You know, once in a lifetime trip kinda of thing, and when I read about the Macadamia Farm at the south end of the island I thought how charming and how fantastic for us to have a 2 bedroom apartment for us as our teenager is 6'3".
I spoke to the owner last August and thought this is great as she offered me all kinds of information. I extended our 3 evgs to 4 evgs.
I paid $150 to reserve in August 2011.
The cancellation policy is in their favour and full payment was due at checkin and is non-refundable for an early checkout unless room can be rebooked. For a full refund "cancellation must be made 30 days or more from 1st night".
We checked in on Dec 26, 2011. We walked down a slope to our lower level rooms ... the Volcano Room is described as 'ground floor' but the house is a split level so it's a basement with one wall of windows/doors. The sliding doors in the 2nd room was iffy to close and unless you looked the sliding glass door, the screen was easily opened. All to say no security.
I tried to keep optimistic. I signed away 3 nights on the VISA card. My mistake! My radar went up the longer we stayed and as we walked down to the room and i thought how strange the entrance is not even a marked path. How unsafe especially if one if not able bodied.
The rooms were spacious enough. Old bedspreads. Conveniences like a bar fridge. Microwave. Coffee Maker.
After time spent in the room our noses became unhappy with the washroom that was in the middle of the two rooms. The sewer spell was overwhelming even with the door closed. The toilet and shower were built up so that the shower was too short for the tall son. Just a weird set up. But okay. we can live with this i thought.
First morning, the expected "sumptious breakast" was stingy. Coffee was a flavoured one and not even hot. Papaya & oranges. ONE Waffle and it was heavy. that was it. What really spoiled a below par B&B breakfast was that the hosts dominated the 'conversation'. I was exhausted by the end of our breakfast and couldn't wait to 'escape'. That's not how it should be.
The day we spent at nearby Volcanoes Park was amazing. We drove back late that night and managed down the hill with lights to the smelly rooms. We had already seen a cockroach trap behind the toilet - okay - it's the tropics and the ground floor is the ground floor but when you open a magazine left by them in the kitchen area and out springs a large black cockroack all you can think of is that you're luggage on the floor is their new home! There are not any luggage racks to keep this off the floor.
Something else missing were toiletries. We had brought nice stuff from our previous stay at a hotel and could use those BUT really when one is travelling especially via airlines you can't bring extra liquids. Just a strange thing to not have provided for a not cheap B&B.
I have to also say I had the worst sleep at this B&B. The roosters started at 1 AM and didn't stop till the morning. The 'wave machine' provided was an annoyance as why am I to listen to a machine to drown out the roosters at a farm.
The smell, lack of good sleep, good breakfast, tension, etc was worth us escaping early and forfitting 2 nights prepaid billing.
We went on to Hilo and spent a glorious night at the Dolphin Bay Hotel who didn't ask me for money until we checked out. They provided us with a very large room with a full kitchen for almost 1/2 the money. I wish I had known before!
I'm surprised by the abundance of favourable reviews and the few terrible reviews.
I think the best places to stay to explore this diverse island is in Kona and Hilo as it makes it easily accessible to see the entire island.
If anyone wants further details, please inquire as I've given just a few.

Room Tip: do not choose the Volcano Room as that's all I can personally attest to.

“A Relaxing Time”

We didn't know exactly what to expect when we booked accommodation at a working macademia nut farm, but we were pleasantly surprised. Despite being a farm, the setting was unexpectedly calm and quiet. We stayed in the Macademia Room and found it to be very comfortable and spacious. Charlene treated us with a tour of the farm which was very interesting and informative (it's a lot of work running a farm!). Charlene proved to be a wealth of information not only regarding places to see and restaurants, but also giving us a real sense of local history and life in Naalehu. Breakfasts were delicious! Thanks, Cortney! The black sand and green sand beaches were only minutes away and Volcano National Park a short drive from here. We also enjoyed the coffee plantation tour that Charlene had arranged for us. All in all, a very good stay in the 3 days we were there!

“A Stay in "Rural" Big Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

I spent five nights at this B&B in the south of the Big Island, convenient to the Volcano National Park as well as other interesting spots like the best black sand beach, the only green sand beach, and the southernmost point of land in the United States.

Breakfasts were served on the lanai of the “big house” and were good and ample.

The owners maintain immaculate rooms (one is urged as in many Hawaiian homes to slip off the shoes when entering).

This is a chance to stay in “rural” Hawaii for in the immediate region of the B&B there are no tourist attractions. One stays here, hearing no traffic but just an amazing number of birds in the trees, and watching the chickens pecking beneath the macadamia trees (thus keeping down the insect population).

The nearest village, Na’alehu, has a superb bakery, renowned throughout the island, turning out delicious sweet breads and excellent malasadas (Portuguese-style doughnuts). If you eat in one of the town’s two restaurants, you’ll be eating local foods with the “locals” themselves.

“Quiet place in beautiful natural surroundings.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

My husand and I thought it would be fun to stay at a macadamia nut farm and it was. We were driving from Waimea to Volcanos Nat. Park. What a great location near the black sand beach of Punalu'u and convenient to the VNP, but without the bad air and heavy traffice around the Park while we were visiting VNP. This was not the Ritz, but a small, working farm with great views and wonderful hearty breakfasts on the lanai. Our room was large, clean, airy, and while we could have put on a white noise machine, we were used to the ubiquitous roosters' crowing we had found in all of rural Hawaii.Although not prime harvest season, we learned a lot on our tour of the orchard. Charlene is very knowledgeable of the industry and local culture. We hope to return some day.

“Spotty and strange service & accommodations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

The rooms are pleasant but sound travels easily between them, and simple things like shampoo and conditioner were not provided, though beach towels and coolers with ice were. There is a gang of chickens and fancy roosters roaming the grounds, which is nice except that the roosters crow at all hours, making sleep challenging. We awoke at 4:30 am most days due to this.

Our hosts were well-intentioned and enthusiastic, but not very professional. They did not sense when we would like to be left to our own conversation, especially at breakfast; they often stood over the table while we ate and delivered monologues, frequently about personal family issues and/or badmouthing people, which made us quite uncomfortable.

The food was mediocre and not made with the highest quality ingredients; jam with high fructose corn syrup, sometimes canned pineapple, juice that was not fresh-squeezed. Coffee was a flavored Kona blend, rather than 100% Kona coffee, which would have been so easy and pleasant to get. According to our host, the blend was to keep us from getting too much caffeine, which is absurd. We were surprised that macadamia nuts were never served or used.

In hindsight, we would rather have stayed elsewhere. If you must, stay one night on the way from Kona to Volcanoes National Park or Hilo, or vice versa. But it is more than missable.

First I want to say it was our pleasure to host this family on our farm and our very best wishes to the newlyweds! Thank you for letting us be a part of this most memorable time in your life. They came to Hawaii for a wedding and it was the son/groom who first
contacted us. Later his family, including his Father who wrote this review, booked rooms. I talked with the Groom about our farm and he was most
comfortable with the farm setting and our central location 1/2 between the two big towns and only 45 min. to Volcano National Park. We have a very
peaceful setting- no street noise, traffic, planes flying over head etc. We are proud to have Hawaiian chickens who help us keep our insects under
control in the orchard ;and allow us to farm pesticide free. Many people love the sounds of a natural night and sleep with their windows wide open
[we have many unique birds on our farm- we're actually listed on a birder sight]. For light sleepers [it's funny how the human brain will pick up the
sound of a rooster on a peaceful Hawaiian night when you are not used to it, but the same person at home can sleep through all kinds of street noise] we
tell them to shut their windows, turn on a fan if needed, and turn up the sound machines by the bed. Reading through the comments made by his Father,
he clearly would have been more happy at a Hotel.

The coffee we serve is actually a Kona Vanilla Macadamia Nut Blend [yes we do serve things with Macadamia Nuts in them]. The jam that was mentioned is
by Hawaiian Sun and made of course right here in Hawaii. Juice also is locally produced here in Hawaii and we delight in serving blends of local
fruits. Most guests have their own shampoos and conditioners now adays [we provide soap]. Things like coolers, beach towels, water bottles etc.- larger items
that it costs you to ship- those are the things folks often need and we're glad to provide them FREE. One thought: we used to provide a small box of items in each suite of things you might have forgotten to bring or need at the last minute- for a minor cost. We had several guests forget to pay us for the items and we were actually going in the red- but maybe there is another way to handle the issue.

Many guests want info on things to do and see on island and we are always happy to talk with them and help them plan their day and get the very most
out of their time here in Hawaii. It became obvious to us very quickly that the Father did not want to be talked with- simply "waited" on and we gladly
left them to their own conversation at the breakfast table. On their last day with us I did take some time to say goodbye- and when I found out the
Father was a medical Dr., talked about our dear son who recently died at 17 of cancer. One can only hope that one day cancer will be cured- and we have
been fortunate to have some brilliant researchers from all over the world stay with us. You never know what piece of information will be the clue to
help someone be able to take treatment to the next step. As for badmouthing people- the only person I commented on negatively was a Dr. who had treated
our son.

This guest never asked about our farm. However, if you'd like to avail yourself of our educational, complimentary orchard tours [got a write up in
the New York Times for them] we'd be glad to have you. And oh- want to learn more about the Hawaiian chickens - glad to fill you in.
