“Could have been better”

My husband and I went from a cozy, in-home bed and breakfast on Kauai to this bed and breakfast, and were disappointed to the point of considered leaving. It took us almost an hour to find the property from Hilo because it was on an unmarked dirt road. (The name of the road had been spray-painted on an electric pole.) It took us half an hour to get anywhere to eat or see anything! The inkeeper was helpful in finding places to eat and visit (though not overly hospitable), but the selling point was the view with the waves crashing into the rocks and splashing over the cliff. Absolutely amazing!

Besides locale, our room was also lacking. We were on our honeymoon, so we splurged on the cottage but found it rather uncomfortable as it smelled like mold and the bed was rock hard. We are big nature lovers and from the boonies of Arkansas (very easy to please), but were still disappointed by the accomodations. Overall, it was okay, but I think you could probably find better on the big island.

“Great place to stay!”

Ditto all of the nice comments from the previous reviews. This was a very comfortable place to stay (we were in the oceanfront suite for 2 nights). Beautiful ocean views, sunrise, hot tub, lap pool, lava cliffs. Tory was a great host. Everything was clean and in good shape. This was a good place to stay to explore the Puna area, Hilo, and the volcano. We will definitely return!

“Wish We Were Still There!!!!”

We had a wonderful stay at Kia'i Kai. My wife and I were looking for pure relaxation for the start of our honeymoon, and that is exactly what we found. Our innkeepers were on vacation themselves (I guess even wen you live in paradise, you still need to get away every now and then!), but their daughter stepped in and we can't imagine being treated any better. Breakfasts were delicious, and the coffee was the best I've ever tasted. We stayed in the Holomoku Suite, which offered exceptional views of the sunrise in the morning, and the sounds of the ocean at night.

The location is great, a good central location within a 30 min drive of Volcano National Park, Hilo to the north, and the tidepools and hot springs of Puna to the south. We wish that we never had to leave!!!

“Would go back today !”

We had 5 people in our 3 generation group ranging in age from 15 to 70. We used Kia`i Kai Bed and Breakfast as a base for our 7 day exploration of the Big Island. The great breakfasts were wonderful. Tory adjusted our breakfast to include eggs each day. I had my first white pineapple there. It was delicious. We stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage equiped with a full kitchen. At night we could hear the soothing ocean waves which helped me sleep. I could sit for hours and watch the ocean waves. I almost never knew there were any neighbours. Almost like having the place to ourselves. Located between Hilo and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, it is a bit of a drive to both but it is not called the Big Island for nothing ! We loved the stories of John's Coast Guard service and experiences.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2003

We stayed at Kia'i Kai for 3 nights in August 2003. We had a fantastic time. The house is gorgeous and sits right atop a 20 foot black cliff.
It is on the east side of the big island where the seas are very rough, so all day and night the waves crash against the rocky cliffs spraying water into the air. It's very dramatic and soothing to listen to at night. (on the downside, if you have very roudy children, it could be dangerous).

Tory was a wonderful host. She has been in Hawaii many years and know all the ins and outs of everything. She gave us fantastic advice about where to eat and the best time to see the lava. She seems to know precise details and useful tips about every site. She is an extremely good source of information. She is also a fantastic cook! The breakfasts were amazing creations made from only local produce. She carefully picks and chooses fresh foods from local merchants during the day, so you may enjoy them the next morning. Every breakfast was a delight! If you have any special diet needs (allergies or vegetarian, etc.), she will go to great lengths to accomidate them.

The B&B also has some things to lend out, like flashlights, maps, and a backpack cooler (first come, first serve). The pool and hot tub were also great. Some people wrote in the guest book about watching dolphins or whales while sitting in the hot tub, but unfortunately we didn't see any.

We stayed at 4 different places on our trip to Hawaii, and this was by far the best. Highly Recommended!
