“A relaxing step back to the real Hawaii and an excellent base from which to explore the rest of the island.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012 via mobile

Pat and Mary have been most gracious hosts. Our stay, while seeing most of the Big Island, often included long hours and it was always a welcome "home" on our return. Located across the street from the ocean, the lenai offers a view of whales and sea turtles as well as the meeting place for guests to share adventures over breakfast.

“A most enjoyable experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My friend and I spent a week here and couldn't have been more satisfied with the the cottage we stayed in which had all the comforts of home, including a nice size TV screen where we could watch the Australian Open after a great day of hiking. The beds were very comfortable and the cottage was exceptionally clean The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful and were eaten on the Lanai overlooking the ocean where we even saw whales one morning. The owners, Pat and Mary, were delightful and very friendly and helpful with suggestions of what to see and places to eat out. A very peaceful and pleasant place to stay with the added bonus of being able to just cross the road and watch the sun rise over the ocean and listen and see the waves pounding over the rocks..

“Great family stay at Ala Kai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Our family of four spent 3 nights in the cottage at Ala Kai B & B. We loved the location, views and our hostesses, Pat and Mary. We cooked several nights and the cottage kitchen had everything we needed and more. The beds are comfy, the house is very clean, the decore is fun tropical and casual so we were really able relax. It is right across the street from the ocean and the views are amazing. We were served a delicious breakfast each morning on their lanai overlooking the pretty pool with the ocean beyond...You won't be disappointed and you won't want to leave!

“Unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Ala Kai is a rare sanctuary from the tourist rush. You reach it by a sinusoidal private road, which by itself is fun to drive,
Immaculate house with accomodations with all amenities of home; elegant , spotlesly clean, where the surf and chorus of the frogs and birds are the only sounds in the night. The swim in an attractive pool or the safe walks under the starry skies end nicely the day of explorations.
The irresistable breakfasts on the lanaii, watching the ocean with the pleasant unobtrusive
but attentive hostesess, expertly helping with planning of the next adventures are invaluable.
One could choose from local farmers markets and shopping centres with the level of the big cities to local cafes and small, but good eateries to fancy restaurants and exceptional quality of artisan galleries, rarely .seen in touristy hubs.
We travel a lot and are our stay in ALA Kai was one of our best experiences

Since there no real great hotels on the Hilo side, our suggestion is to stay at a B & B and what a better place to stay than Ala Kai. Mary and Pat (owners) are gracious hosts. Very relaxing and breakfast is scrumptious. With the sounds of waves and gorgeous views to be had from the lanai. Beautiful walks along the cliffs and spot sea turtles along the way. Relaxing in or by the pool, awesome!
Close to Volcano's, downtown Hilo, Pahoa (a step back in time) and 2 1/2 hour drive to Kona. The drive to Waimea and Kohala is beautiful. Enjoy the Big Island, very diversified.

Room Tip: Pick the cottage, 2 bedroom, large bathroom, full kitchen and all the conveneice of home. And 2 gre...
