“A relaxing delight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2009

The one bedroom cottage was spotlessly clean and well-appointed. The kitchen was amply equipped with eating utensils, pots and pans, and matched dishware. We experienced excellent WIFI, good TV reception, and relaxation on the lanai (patio), surrounded by various indigenus plants, shrubs, and trees.

Our host thought of everything, including a fruit basket, milk and some food in the refrigerator, umbrellas, and flashlights. He was gracious and informative. His written, detailed "Adventures" were most helpful.

The only drawback was that bottled water had to be used for drinking. Our host provided two gallons on arrival. However, bottles could be refilled for 30 cents at a grocery store in Pahoa, or for nothing at a nearby public works site.

Staying at "Deep Hawaii" was a pleasant, economical experience for exploring the east side of the island.

“Lovely”

I must say that my husband and I had a awsome time. The manager was so helpful and pointed out places to go and things to see. The closest place to get a newspaper and gas was the first left from the main road. You could almost walk to it. The cottages are all being updated with new beds and furniture. Idid not have any bug problems or dirt problems. However I personally like open windows. It is not a hotel it is a home away home. We will return!! The aloha was a plenty and I did enjoy the fruit and flowers. Thankyou Hazel

We have added BOTH Internet and cable in June '08. We've also done extensive landscaping to add to the hunreds of trees and plants already there before. And, more updating of furnishings. Our goal is for our guests to say: "All this for only $...." And then recommend us to their friends and family . . .as well as return-perhaps to see what else we have improved since their last visit. The volcano is performing!!! Can't miss this awesome spectacle.

“Really deceptive sell on this DUMP!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2008

Still cannot believe the difference between what was promised by the web site, and what we found there.
This place was filthy, smelled like chicken dung, and was way, way far from any place we wanted to be ( was represented by the owner to to be " near Pahoa, ha!) and was actually located in a housing tract or subdivision far from anything. No fruit of any kind was to be found on the fruit trees that were amply advertised on the web site for picking by guests.
The service, including the much less than adequate cleaning before our arrival, was awful. The proprietor seemed charming on the phone when we rented, but was completely disinterested after we arrived, and even refused to assist us with problems. It was hot in the cabin, and there were loads of mosquitos that got in through bad screens. We left early, sadly disappointed with the whole deal. Sure it is cheap, but I would have happily paid the same money never to have gone there in the first place!

  • Liked — Getting over the sting of it's poor quality in the next great hotel we found on the Kona side.

As the new owner of Deep Hawaii, I am concerned about this reviewer's experience.

I am unaware of any chicken dung smell, the closest chickens are 1/4 mile away; mosquitoes are a presence in east Hawaii, which we try hard to control; Pahoa is 15 minutes away; Orchardland is 5 minutes; Keaau town is 15 minutes; and Hilo is 25 minutes -

As far as I know, every effort to provide a clean unit is taken prior to arrival, and my manager is always helpful, with many fine compliments by our other guests through the months since I've taken over.

“Run, do not walk away from this dump!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2007

This place is a total rip off and a dump. We rented the one bedroom unit. Nearly ruined our vacation last summer. The cottages are dirty, hot, and have no working fans ( The caretaker explained to us that the owner sets them to turn so slowly, to save power) The sheets are ragged and did not smell clean. Our next door neighbor, anothe guest, was staying in the studio right beside us and said she had found pubic hair in her sheets when she arrived, and so came over to wash them at our place where we had a washer /dryer, but only after there was no response from the care taker about her problem.
The places are all in a subdivision, next to a chicken yard and it smells, and is noisy.
We spent one entire day waiting on a repairman for the repair of a plugged lav drain. We left later, soon after the sluggish toilet plugged up too, and the owner blamed us! We left a week of paid lodging behind us. The owner originally agreed to return part of the money, but then sent us a check that bounced!
This was the worst-ever accomodations in thirty eight years of travel, bar none. The owner seems to be a crack pot and a phoney, too. The websire is totally misleading, and full of aloha BS. The actual location is miles and miles from Pahoa and that is identified as the nearby location by a fake map. Beware!

"Last Summer" means 2006, but review was entered in 2007. I became the new owner JUly 2007. Since then, we have had nothing but compliments: cleanliness; new furnishings; helpful management-even to the point of driving one guest around that couldn't drive.
New dishes, new pots and pans; new bedding; new linens.
And CLEAN. My manager is fastidious to a fault!
And, we continue to keep our rates low - so families can aford to experience the real Hawaii that we love. To malign our rentals a year after they have been improved gives the wrong impression to poeple who could really enjoy their stay. BUT - East Hawaii is NOT for the poolside-$300/night crowd - who looks for a bargain, yet expects the very best anyway (we actually have the audacity to consider our rentals - among the best!). It is for people who appreciate the country and all it offers. The proximity to Red Road; Volcanoes Park; Hilo town-one of the most beautiful towns on earth; its beaches; observatory; wonderful parks and gardens; stunning scenery.
Yes, there are chickens - but a quarter mile away. And, yes you do have to travel 10-20 minutes to dine, and yes, while there are twelve kinds of fruit - they don't bear every day.
Our Policy: come - and if you don' t like our wonderful grounds and rental units (2- one bedrooms; 1 studio; 1-2 bedroom-all large units) then you can leave and we'll give you your money back.
And, if you have visited before, you'll see the difference, including more landscaping planned to add to the dozens of palms and ginger and bird of paradise and night blooming jasmine and - it's a lush garden/orchard.

“Affordable but questionalbe cleanliness”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2006

We stayed in the studio unit. This property has several individual units. The studio is the smallest and it has a washing machine, no dryer. The unit has no a/c so you must leave the windows open at night. The roosters in the neighborhood will wake anybody up. The website states there are fruits on the property to pick but not so when we were there in July. We brought our own mosquito net because this is the rainy side of the island and thank goodness we did. The floor was dusty when we arrived. The bathroom and kitchen were clean. There is no stove but a burner was available on the counter. The bed was perhaps the most troublesome. It was old and has stains on it (yuck!). It is not near any convenience store or market since the property is in the middle nowhere. You have to drive 15 minutes out to Kea`au for food and supplies.

However, this place is centrally located near Volcano National Park, Hilo, and new Kaimu black sand beach (this beach is a secret to most visitors). For $50 a night so not all was lost. Next time, I think i'll just stay in Hilo.

I am the new owner of Deep Hawaii since July 2007.

I am sorry the reviewer's experience wasn't all together a pleasant one under the former owner's management.

Since taking over, many improvements have been made, and I thtink the reviewer could now have a great experience "in the country"

I hope he will give us a try in the future.
