We just spent 2 1/2 weeks at the Mauna Lani Terrace before, during and after the Ironman and had a great time. We've stayed here two years ago when our travel agent booked us here, enjoyed ourselves and wanted to come back. South Kohala Management, who we had never heard of, managed the property. We checked in with them, they provided maid service and were on site for any problems we might have had, though there were none. They did help us get the "lay of the land" and we appreciated having someone local give us some tips since we had never been there before.
We booked this trip directly through South Kohala and, again, all went smoothly. With their on-site staff we felt we had the advantages of a hotel AND the advantages of a condo with more space, a kitchen and freedom from hotel prices. Though we did go to the hotel for some meals; the best of both worlds.
We would also recommend the Ironman as good time to book, if that event holds any interest to you. Kona is buzzing with Ironman athletes moving around, the roads have lots of them training and Kona has many triathlon oriented product vendors with booths, etc. Friday afternoon we went to the pier and watched the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars worth of beautiful high tech bikes being staged for the event next day. On Saturday we watched the bikes on the highway for awhile which was fun, but the best part was going down to the finish line late to watch the last people finish the race. Chrissie Wellington, the women's' winner, was there to greet every late finisher with a hug. The announcer has a short bio of each athlete and regales all with some info about each athlete, many with truly inspiring stories. The trip to the finish line required a detour way up the hill and then back down to Kona to find a place to park so our cars were not on the road with the athletes but we were able to park a short walk from the finish line.
We booked our car through South Kohala's site, too. I was concerned about getting a car easily during the Ironman but we had no trouble getting a car or feeling the car rental rate was spiked up during the event.
All in all, a great experience. We're Big Island focused for our sun & heat fix vacations for the near future.
