“Welcoming, comfortable, private and nicely appointed”

We chose to stay at Puako B&B because of its reviews and proximity to beaches we wanted to explore. We were delighted by the many small touches that made us feel truly welcomed and comfortable, both in our room and in the shared areas. Tasty breakfasts, and lots of caring attention paid to us by Kelly, our host. Beautiful landscaping surrounds this lovely home. The beach access just a few houses down the street is rocky, but boasts lovely sunset views and the opportunity to see sea turtles swimming in the shallow pools and snoozing on the rocks. Beautiful sandy beaches with good snorkeling are a short drive away. We would come back to this place.

“Relaxing, beautiful touch of Hawaii”

Puako B&B is a relaxing, close-to-the-beach, slice of Hawaii. I had not been to Hawaii for 37 years, and am usually a large-chain-hotel type of client. Staying here was perfect for a single traveler, and the couples I met were very happy there also. The rooms are tastefully decorated, with in-room A/C units so you can chose to use it or not. I chose not to. The tropical vegetation in the garden brings the Hawaiian aloha spirit close to you and the beach is just a short walk across the street. Breakfasts were fresh, on-time, and always had a variety of breads, fruit, eggs/oatmeal/fried-rice - and of course, fantastic coffee. Puna and Kelly are superb hosts, and Puna provided all of us with fascinating historical facts along with personal anecdotes that absolutely MADE my trip to Hawaii worthwhile.

“Puako B&B - A Wonderful Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2009

It has been 10 years since our last trip to the Big Island and we were dismayed by the growth in commercialism and the mega resorts. Puako B&B was a pleasant surprise and a glimpse of a rapidly disappearing Hawaii. Located in a little quiet little village off the main highway, the property is located close to some of the best beaches on the island.

The property, the ancestral home of the hosts, is clean and comfortable and contains many family heirlooms. If you have the money to spring for the suite it is well worth it. We stayed in the Makai room which opens on to a little porch. The private bath has been attractively remodeled.

Our friendly hosts were gracious in accommodating our needs for every activity and provided great information on the area. Breakfasts were served at attractively set table and consisted of fresh fruit, pastries and egg dishes with fresh herbs from the garden.

We spent a wonderful week in Puako and hope to return again soon!

“Loved it”

After 5 days at Kona's Four Seasons Resort, I checked into Puako which was filled with a homeful of new and interesting friends. It was overbooked. But Punahele, my excellent host provided a next-door space that was larger than what I had reserved and at no additional cost. He was an ideal host and could not have been more accommodating, helpful, and generous.
The morning breakfasts were abundant and delicious. The facilities clean and well maintained.
I enjoyed very much my time at Puako B&B finding little time for other Bg Island diversions, so I look forward to my return.

“Great location but not well maintained or overly welcoming”

Puako is one of my favorite spots on the Big Island, near some of the most incredible beaches on earth as well as interesting cultural sites like the Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site and the Lapakahi State Historical Park‎. Paul's pretty home is situated near these areas and is landscaped beautifully and decorated tastefully. However, upon arrival we noticed a distinct unpleasant odor reminiscent of mold or water damage. There appeared to be several air conditioners/dehumidifiers operating. His welcome was rather brusque and matter of fact, with no mention of the communal spa, library/living room or time for breakfast. His harried distracted fashion may be due to the recent passing of his esteemed mother, as you can see from her memorial in the kitchen. I offer my condolences but this is NOT the way to greet arriving guests, even if it is for only one night.
The small Flower Room has a lovely Hawaiian quilted bedspread, dresser and two overly small useless end tables plus a barely adequate air conditioner window unit. The bath room is across the hall and is a disaster! There are missing towel racks, leaky faucets, moldy and grody caulking. My partner said he could spend a whole day in this room alone just repairing the many things that needed basic maintenance!
Breakfast was cereal, fruit and delicious pancakes, with coconut syrup, plus an assortment of exotic preserves.
Costing over $100 a night, his B&B was a disappointment due to the unwelcome greeting, unmaintained and dirty bathroom and strong unpleasant odor. I won't be back.
