Puako is one of my favorite spots on the Big Island, near some of the most incredible beaches on earth as well as interesting cultural sites like the Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site and the Lapakahi State Historical Park. Paul's pretty home is situated near these areas and is landscaped beautifully and decorated tastefully. However, upon arrival we noticed a distinct unpleasant odor reminiscent of mold or water damage. There appeared to be several air conditioners/dehumidifiers operating. His welcome was rather brusque and matter of fact, with no mention of the communal spa, library/living room or time for breakfast. His harried distracted fashion may be due to the recent passing of his esteemed mother, as you can see from her memorial in the kitchen. I offer my condolences but this is NOT the way to greet arriving guests, even if it is for only one night.
The small Flower Room has a lovely Hawaiian quilted bedspread, dresser and two overly small useless end tables plus a barely adequate air conditioner window unit. The bath room is across the hall and is a disaster! There are missing towel racks, leaky faucets, moldy and grody caulking. My partner said he could spend a whole day in this room alone just repairing the many things that needed basic maintenance!
Breakfast was cereal, fruit and delicious pancakes, with coconut syrup, plus an assortment of exotic preserves.
Costing over $100 a night, his B&B was a disappointment due to the unwelcome greeting, unmaintained and dirty bathroom and strong unpleasant odor. I won't be back.
