“A Beautiful room, but a little too restrictive”

I hesitate to write this review, but I wish we knew some of these things before we stayed here. The room was beautiful and the property was nice. The owner was very kind. However, when we arrived we learned the "common areas" were off limits after sunset and we could have no food or drink in our room or on the private lanai. This meant that when we were out for the day, when we returned we were restricted to the room for the evening. There was no where to read, relax, or listen to music. The private lanai was nice, but our December visit meant the outside was quite chilly and the lanai was not comfortable in the evening. Our hostess had a job that required her to work very late at night. She slept when she could. We found ourselves whispering most of the time so as not to disturb her. Her room was right off ours. Unfortunately, it was not an ideal situation for us.

“Perfect Romantic Get Away”

We just spent two delightful, evenings at the Orchid Inn in Holualoa, Hawaii. We stayed in the Zanzibar Suite, which has the most incredible ocean views anytime day or night. The exotic four poster bed is sumptiously outfitted with wonderful feather-soft pillows and a furry zebra print comforter that kept us cozy at night. The sweet little town of Holualoa is within walking distance and filled with art galleries, coffee tasting, and unique shops; and only about 15 minutes drive from Kailua Kona with more shops, restaurants and beaches. The owner, Darrelyn is an amazingly asute hostess. She seems to be able to pick up on just what you are needing to make your stay wonderful. Whether it's a special request for breakfast, or a little history and conversation or time to be on your own and just have some peace and quiet, She has a gift for making you feel comfortable and welcome. My husband and I spent an incredible, long, romantic afternoon just listening to music, sipping wine and playing Scrabble out on our private lanai. Breakfast includes fresh, delicious local fruits--many grown on the property--and yummy treats like Hawaiian sweetbread French toast iwth 100% pure Maple syrup or omeletts with garden fresh veggies grown by Darrelyn. The grounds around the house are carefully tended, filled with tropical flowers, exotic scents and birdsong. I would definitely recommend this Bed and Breakfast to all adults wanting some time away from fast pace of regular life. Just being there seems to nourish the spirit and recharge your mental batteries. It's a perfect romantic getaway, honeymoon, or just for some time away from it all. Thank you, Darrelyn!

  • Liked — Seems like you are far away from everything, but you are actually only 15 min. from the beach.
  • Disliked — The restaurant within walking distance is somewhat pricey--however the food is great.

“Great Experience at the Orchid Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2008

We stayed at the Orchid Inn October 16-23 in the Garden Suite . We loved the openness of the room and the fresh air however, the suite basically has no windows, just screens so she can probably hear just about everything, I think, wink wink. ;-) Otherwise the Inn has a 5 in our book. The grounds were beautiful. The Inn is secluded which makes it a great hideaway from the "tourist thing". Our room had a kitchen which was great since we didnt eat out much while there. Since Darrelyn stays right above the Garden Suite she makes herself available and is an extremely gracious proprietress. She is a wealth of information about the island and can recommend the best of whatever it is your are wanting to do or see. She even set us up with a private trip out on the water to swim with the dolphins, it was amazing. A different breakfast with fresh coffee every morning was very nice. The view from the lanai is beautiful. Upon leaving one morning at 530am she made us breakfast sandwiches so we wouldnt go without breakfast. That was really going above and beyond. Overall, we just thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We would definately go back.

  • Liked — Home away from hom
  • Disliked — The close proximity of the guest with proprietress, limiting privacy

“Elegant, romantic, blooming, colorful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2008

My spouse and I stayed in the Garden Suite for a couple of days and found the experience absolutely delightful. The photos on the website accurately depict this charming, private suite. The walls facing the ocean are either glass or net doors so we fell in love with the openness of the place. This feature allowed us to go to fall asleep in the middle of the aroma of the flowers from the garden and walk up watching the ocean from the bed. It was absolutely amazing.

The owner decorated the inn by herself and did an amazing job with great attention to details. Moreover, Darrelyn is an amazing host and she didn’t joke when she mentioned on the website that she loved entertaining. For the duration of our stay, we felt she really was there to make our stay as pleasant as possible. And she called in her friends for some help and facilitated a private boat trip to do some snorkeling , scuba diving and swimming with the dolphins.

“Fabulous Inn! Highly Recommended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2008

I booked a two night stay at The Orchid Inn on October 21 & 22, 2008 in conjunction with my destination wedding. The home is absolutely stunning and the attention to detail is amazing. The owner was willing to personalize my visit and even provided breakfast (for a small fee) for members of our wedding party who were not guests of the Inn.

I would highly recommend the Orchid Inn for a romantic get away during your time on the Big Island. It is about a 25 minute drive up Mauna Kea from downtown Kailua-Kona, but if you want something special and memorable, it is worth the effort to get there!

  • Liked — It was a beautiful, serene setting. A perfect gem hidden away from the hustle of Kona.
  • Disliked — The 25 minute drive up winding roads in the dark.
