“meditations on noise”

This place has both long term and overnight kind of place. Mostly it seems longer term on studio-or one bedroom apartments piled up on top and around eachother and all round a central court yard where a small pool fills with laughter in the afternoons when school lets out .... Think Hitchcock's "Rear Window" meets "Hawaii 5 0"....There is wildlife like Ducks and roaches, rats and tree frogs and birds. There is a man made stream running through the place for the ducks and rats to swim in. The Koi eat most of the mosquito larvea but I haven't seem the koi in awhile. I like the call of the Puerto Rican tree frog so it's not annoying to me but many would like to silence those "!@#$%" critters. They do have a high decible. The laundry rooms are along side the rooms, the recidences, This means that there is always that laundromat flavor around the laudnry room areas when they are in use, which is often during the weekends especially. None of the machines work well many don't work at all making the poor machines still kinda spinning groan and since the exhaust vents have been clogged since, say, the Carter administration there is often a steam sauna feel in the rooms. I will give the place kudos for having cheap enough rent and letting people in who might have a hard time finding somethng else where. There is no way to predict when a drinking party of revelers or someone's very own music festival will erupt on a balcony near you. Luckily it won't be when you have to get up the next morning, nor go on for very long. There is one section of studios butting up against a night spot area and that too can get noisy. Sometimes drunks wander into the grounds from the bar area at night so don't be alarmed, they just want a wall to piss against. This is an old Regencey (I think) with some short term rentals but it seems most are for sale or now owned by people who come part time or rent out their places either for short or long term. If you are a party animal or young college student without too much homework you may enjoy it here. Older people looking for peace and quiet go elsewhere..

  • Liked — periods of relative calm
  • Disliked — periods of reviative noisiness
  • Tips/Secrets — If you like a drink friendly environment ok.

“very reasonable housing in very tight rental market...”

Most people had it good when moving to big island.I did not.Initially a co-worker had let me stay at his place for a few days.Did not have enough time to find any apartment.Stayed at a insect ridden rat infested room in a house for severaly months, then decided enough was enough. Moved to Waiakea Villa. Not only is it more saner, but with a lease its more enjoyable.Have found the office people to be quite enjoyable despite the fact they can't do much of anything.I really feel for thier jobs.

Aloha,

I stayed at Waiakea Villas in Building 1 from June 04 to Feb 05 while by home was being built in Hilo. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful.

Waiakea Villas & the local phone company allowed me to have a phone /DSL line installed prior to my arrival. There were no problems with the installation or performance of the DSL.

Human noise was an issue two or three times -- each time it was an inconsiderate drunk tourist partying on their balcony at 1am or 2am in the morning. Bird noise was daily - usually in the morning and late evening from mynah birds, ducks and geese.

Parking was always available (they give you a parking sticker to put behind the rearview mirror of your vehicle).

It is a very short walk to Mio's restaurant - which is rated as one of the best Japanese restaurants on the Big Island.

Waiakea pond is adjacent to the complex and it is a 20 min walk thru this park to Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, the Suisan fish market & Coconut Island.

Waiakea Villas is a well located excellent value and I would stay there again.

“Horrible Living”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2004

I have lived at Waiakea Villa's on a 6 month lease. This was the most horrible 6 months of my life. Their was no cold water in the morning so you would have to take scalding hot showers. I also made numerous request to get it fixed and managment did nothing. Sometimes they thought it was funny. The ponds are mosquito infested and is very smelly. Their are ducks who quack at all times in the early morning and nite. Their are HUGE roaches and and rats crawling all over the place. Their are alot of people hanging out in the parking lots, drinking and leaving their beer bottles on the roadways. Their is niteclub which is also on the Hotel Property which you will hear alot of noise and loud music. Their are security guards who dont do nothing but stand around. Alot of thefts to vehicles and bikes. I have also heard of alot of stories about Waiakea Villa's being haunted. Washers and Dryers which cost $1.00 a load but dont get the clothes cleaned or dried in one try. On top of that the rent is $600 bucks a month for a tiny studio. Think about it, look at all the reviews this isn't a place to live. This was one of the worst experience in my life.....

“A bit of positive”

I don't understand why everyone is so scathing. I live in the villas and I am very pleased with it. So far, I have only had to call management to fix my hot water regulator and my oven and both times someone was there in fifteen minutes to fix it. Try finding that at any other apartments in Hilo. I have a lanai that looks out on a fishpond (never seen one rat), which seems a lot better than looking at a car dealership or the back dumpster of a Burger King. To all the people who complain about the nightclub and noisy neighbors, did you ever think of asking for a different apartment? All in all I think the villas are a great place to stay, with very friendly, courteous management and staff (lots of Aloha).
The only problems I have are the roaches and the DUCKS, which have quack attacks at all hours of night and day.
