We stayed at all three Pineapple Park properties while on the Big Island. Doc and Annie were excellent hosts and they gave us a nice discount off of the "semi-private" rate as well as upgrading us to private rooms with private baths in the Hilo and Kona locations. They were renovating at Hilo while we were there, and they ended up asking us to change rooms for our last night. They had originally said they'd put us in a semi-private for the last night, but then ended up putting us alone in a dormitory with a 2 bunk beds and a double bed and a private bath, which ended up being pretty nice. The first room we had was very small, barely large enough to fit the double bed without much room to walk around or store our luggage. Each room did have a mini cube fridge and TV, and window air conditioners (which we did not expect in our price range). There was also a nice shared living room area and functional shared kitchen. One disappointment was that we were expecting a Queen bed and ended up with a double which we find a little tight. The bathrooms were clean and functional. Contrary to what another reviewer wrote, the rooms do have locking doors.

Like the volcano location, Hilo is on the wet side of the island and unfortunately the entire place had a moldy/mildewy smell to it.

I think we were the only ones staying there during our stay -- or at least we never saw anyone other than Doc and the renovations crew.

If you're willing to accept a pretty bare-bones accommodation, you can get a bargain by staying at Pineapple Park, and also save money on food by taking advantage of their kitchen facilities. While in Hilo, sure to visit the Farmer's Market -- we went on a Saturday and it was fantastic -- excellent fruits, veggies, and prepared food at great prices.

We thought this was a B&B and what a surprise to find it being a hostel/backpackers place close to the airport in a slightly run down state. Definitely not a neat and luxury place. I have to admit that I am a bit spoiled with having stayed at 4 and 5 star hotels recently.
Once you close your eyes to details and have met Marc, the host, it is an ok place. I had to decide to say recommend or not and I was torn. Depends on what you want and look for. We only needed it to have a place to stay for 3 nights. Not overrun.
Hostel style. Bunk beds, no lock on room door. Could use the fridge.
Shower was sort of clean. We asked for towels (usually not included) and got some that have been quite old (stained but clean).
The beds were not all bad (and I am picky as I sleep on the side and have an issue with being sore in the morning). We had a double bed in our room which was the best bed.
The place was pretty much clean. There was even a small TV with some channels, although they were not clear.
If you are on a budget, give this a try.
