We wanted to experience the whole island so Hilo was part of our itinerary. The hotels looked pretty yucky so we chose this B&B. Jay, the owner, was absolutely wonderful. He treated us like family without being intrusive. He let the girls pick bananas right from the tree. He was very eager to share local info and directions. The grounds were a gardener's paradise -- flowers, fruit trees, cocunuts, you name it. There were fresh and saltwater mixed tide pools at the end of a short trail and the view was fabulous. There were fresh flowers in the huge rooms and they let us drop off our luggage very early the day we arrived. That being said, it's kind of a decorator's nightmare. I didn't mind, it reminded me of family lakehouses I visited growing up -- where the old furniture goes to live out it's years. It had everything we needed including lots of space and a great proximity to the things we wanted to do. After seeing some of the hotels as we drove around and having dinner in one, we were very pleased with our choice.
