Hilo is a sweet, little town with some of the old Hawaii feeling still evident. But, we don't have much to offer in terms of affordable, overnight accomodation. Between worn-out Billy's and the luxury and expense of the Shipman mansion the only reasonable for singles (can choose dorm or private room) or families (ensuite private room and bath) is the Hilo Bay Hostel. Once there, no car is needed but, free parking if you have one. Corner of Waianuenue and Keawe can be a bit noisy during the school rush hour... the intermediate and high school is up the street 4 blocks and when an ambulance passes on its way to the hospital 1.5 mile away. But, the best deal is the open kitchen which allows you to beat the lousy and overpriced Hilo restaurants. Shop for your groceries a few blocks up Keawe and cook your own in the hostel. Warning: don't opt for the 'co-ed dorm'... last time there, a sleezy guy was jerking off all night! Yeech!
