“Just like taking our dog/bestbuddy to grandma's house.. Totally awesome”

Let me tell you that Maureen loves animals. She was so good to us she even said she was going to keep our dog as deposit and odin
(our dog) really loved her! She also gave my husband cold meds when he wasn't feeling well. Great place to stay if you want to be walking distance to beach parks and like waking up to great food bright and early. We were lucky, we had the whole upper house to ourselves so making it feel like home was easy. Did I mention it's the only place in hilo that allows pets! Everytime we come to this side of the Island our family will be staying here. This is the real Hawaii :)

“Very cozy, and beautiful structure”

This B&B is a beautiful place. Very close to the airport and across the street from a gorgeous lagoon (the lagoon is part of a cond). Yes, each bathroom is shared by two bedrooms. But we didnt have a problem with this (no one was staying in teh adjacent room at the time), and it is not so unusual for B&Bs. The shower unit could use some updating, but it was just fine if you dont mind a hand-held shower head. Breakfast was fantastic (wheat and honey waffles and fresh fruit, coffee, tea, juice). Maureen is friendly, responsive to emails and was willing to take us in at 1030 at night without complaint, even though we notified her the night before that we would be arriving at that time.

“Must Stay”

Maureen's is a wonderful B&B in a great location. Maureen herself is a lovely person with real character. The house is gorgeous and you get a hot breakfast every morning. A couple of caveats for the finicky: the bathrooms are not en-suite and may be shared and some of the common rooms are open air (normal for a house in Hawaii). If you want the Four Seasons, look elsewhere. If you want a beautiful house with a lovely inn keeper, close to Hilo and a great beach, then try Maureen's.

“Enjoyable stay at Maureen's place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2010

Maureen's B&B was a comfortable stop, well suited for a Hilo traveler who wants to immerse in the laid back, open to nature style of Hawaii rather than the typical American-style hotel. It's an interesting home with a lot of unusual touches, and the relaxed attitude permeates your stay, including your discussions with Maureen.

Our room was small but roomy enough, though it would have been nice to have a closet for our gear. The bed was quite comfortable. As usual in Hawaii, it was most comfortable with windows open at least part of the night.

The shared bathroom just down the hall was the biggest negative. It really needs to be updated to deal with rusted pipes and add a real shower in place of the handheld shower.

We visited when we had one end of the house to ourselves, so it was very quiet. But we wondered how it would be when all rooms (8?) are full since the walls didn't seem to stop any noise. The parking area might also be a challenge then. But the closeness would be very nice for families.

The home is not for those nervous about security since there aren't any locks on the house or rooms. Still, we felt safe since we were in low-crime Hilo.

Breakfast was good but nothing fancy, each day featuring a nice fruit plate followed by waffles served with an assortment of interesting syrups. Maureen was very accommodating with information about the local area, suggestions for places to eat and visit, and all kinds of equipment for the beaches and snorkeling.

The B&B was close to some very nice lagoons and black sand beaches, including a hidden gem we accidentally discovered at the end of the road (just take the wrong driveway off the cul-de-sac). It was a little further to the airport, shops, and the farmers' market, but not bad at all.

Some of the more interesting places in the Hilo area can be found by wandering beyond the intended streets and roads, so enjoy it. Be sure to see the Botanical Gardens north of Hilo, and the natural beauty all around.

“Not what I would expect from descriptions.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2010

We were not informed through booking that we would have to share a bathroom. Note you will almost certainly have to. There is no way to lock your room, and the entire house is not locked. There were large dead bugs on the floor. The entire main floor's walls are actually screens, which would be a beautiful way to live in tropical Hilo, except that two of the screens were missing, and bug spray was mandatory to even sit "inside" the house. The place is advertised as no children under 7, but there was a crying baby there. One shower is actually a cobbled-together spray head in an unused whirlpool tub, where strings have been put up on the ceiling to suspend shower curtains. There were large dead insects on the floor of our room when we arrived. There are half-used leftover bits of bottles of everything left by previous travellers in the bathrooms. The toilet was broken and required the tank lid to be lifted off to stop it running all night. There are cockroach traps everywhere. Given this place is more than you might pay at a budget hotel, it is certainly not worth the premium for a B and B.
I will say breakfast was fantastic. However, I would definitely not recommend this to others.
