“a very good stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Recent reviewers have summed it up well. Amazing location, laid back atmosphere, comfortable and welcoming. We stayed in the Pagoda as its more private and therefore possibly less noisy than other room options. (Also i loved the idea of falling asleep on a specially-raised-to-window-height Superking size bed and seeing the waterfall, right there - from my pillow- not sure if the other rooms give you that view!?) The Pagoda is v comfortable with well equipped kitchen, Sat tv and internet (wifi in main Guest area in house), very soft linen and thick mattress toppers... a scrapbook with details of recommended restaurants was also a nice touch. The "spa" which houses the hot tub, is a convenient 10 steps away from the Pagoda terrace (which has sun loungers etc).

The owner has just completed two new walks through the grounds, with more waterfalls to bathe in and some wonderful tropical planting. oh and check out the amazing chimes as you walk down to the waterfall. A lot of thought and effort has gone into the property to make it even more magical.

Minuses? -only little ones:1. the house could be cold perhaps, if it ever gets cold here - as no heating and no solid doors to the outside patio and garden, only sliding Japanese style translucent panels.
2. We did not see any mozzis outside so can't comment about efficiency of mozzi screens downstairs - but as has been commented before -there is a 3" gap between the end of the screen and the frame - slightly strange but there must be a reason for this).
3. If i were to be very picky- the property will need touch of tlc at some stage as its just losing the shine off its v manicured and boutique hotel look shown on the web site, but its still an amazing place to stay.

Recommended. Am happy to answer any questions from TA readers.

“A Slice of Heaven!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Beautiful. The setting is beyond comparison. This bed and breakfast has the most breath taking view I've ever seen from my breakfast table. The dining area looks out over a near 100 ft private waterfall, which causes the same sound that will lull you to sleep at night. The rooms are nice, nothing fantastic but well kept and with private bathrooms.

The morning breakfast is very good. Made to order by a staff member with plenty of fruit and fresh local pastries/bread. You will have many acres to roam around on and explore the base of the waterfall and natural pool. We didn't swim but it is allowed uncer certain conditions. The hosts are very friendly and do a great job at making you feel welcome.

The location is out of the way. A narrow, winding road takes you out of the city, through groves of Macademia Nut groves and ends at the Inn. This is part of what gives the Inn such charm...it is secluded! While you're there stop at the farm on the way out and buy some fresh macademia nuts (inxluding flavored varieties) and other local items.

This was definitely the highlight of our Big Island vacation!

“Gem in the hills above Hilo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

If you're looking to get away from it all, the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls is just what you need. About a 20 min drive from the city of Hilo, the inn rests delightfully far from the traffic and noise of the city in stunning natural environs overlooking a waterfall and pool suitable for swimming (if you don't mind a slightly treacherous hike to the bottom of the valley and the cold mountain spring waters). Lenny and the staff at the Inn are wonderful and accommodating. Your stay includes a home cooked breakfast every morning served with a smile. My advice: forget the commercial anonymity of a resort and stay here with people who really care about your experience.

Details: we spent a couple of nights in the "residence," the main building, as well as a couple of nights in the pagoda, which we shared with another couple. With four people, the pagoda is the best deal, as it's about the same price as two rooms in the residence, but you have your own private living room, kitchen, one and a half baths, and a magical view of the waterfall. In the pagoda they provide eggs, juice, etc. for your breakfast, so you can cook whenever you wake up.

What's close by: the Hilo side of the island is great for access to Volcano National Park, hiking, snorkeling, and the chance to lose yourself in the wilderness. If you're a beach bum, you're probably better served finding something on the Kona side.

“The Pagoda House”

This was the nicest B&B we have ever stayed at. The waterfall seems loud, but after a while it lulls one to sleep. Both my wife and daughter and i claim it was one of the best sleeps we've had.

Initially, a little tricky to find so we were happy our first trip up those four miles was during daylight. Signs were good, but still, if after dark, one would wonder where those signs were taking you. Very nice, peaceful location.

Room Tip: Pagoda House sat by itself and only one rental unit. Not sure how others would be, but the two othe...

“Relaxing and romantic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

What a great and scenic place. The views and setting are gorgeous, Rooms are not large, but very well done. Our housekeeper Lea, put on a great breakfast and was a valuable resource on things to see and do. A bit of a drive up out of town(about 15 minutes) but well worth it for the scenery and atmosphere. we would definitely stay there again
