“Like actually being in someone's house”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I love B+B's, but I do actually like a bit of distance from my host. In this case, one of the hosts was living -- with her dogs and her TV and her guests -- in the room next to ours. The kitchen was wide open, and we had to walk through it to get the patio dining table, so we ended up watching all the cooking and cleaning. It really was like being a guest in someone's home, except that someone is a total stranger. It felt like we were imposing on her personal space.

The rooms themselves were decorated with character, and the bathroom was really very luxurious. The beds are sleep-number beds, so it is hard for them to be uncomfortable. But we also had a chair that was too rickety to sit in and a lamp with no bulbs (which made the room quite dark, actually.)

“The Jungle House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Our stay was at the Jungle House in Pahoa which is actually run by the same folks that manage the Hilo B&B. We are a family of four with older children of the opposite sex, and the male being tall. Usually, we have to rent 2 hotel rooms. The Jungle House was perfect for us, each child got their own room with a bed for the same price of one hotel room. If you are going to the Volcano, the location is perfect. It is approx halfway between Hilo, and the Volcano. There are many activities , and sights nearby. The restaurants in town were great as well. Danny was helpful with all aspects of our stay. Since it is a farm which supplies food for their Bed and Breakfast, we were supplied with food for breakfast every day. Items such as papayas, pineapples, bananas, fresh eggs, avacado's, english muffins, coffee, milk, and orange juice. The house itself is very charming with 3 bedrooms, 1-1/2 bath, kitchen, living room, and quaint lanai. A washer, and dryer are outside and available for use. I definitely could see myself renting this house, and staying for a month!!! It is tropical paradise!!! Being a plant person, I prefer the Hilo side of the island to the Kona side. The house is surrounded by lush tropical trees, and plants.

“Private and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Stayed in the lava room. Located on the ground floor below the other rooms with a separate entrance and patio on the back. The room is very nice with an asian style of decoration and great shower, although shower floor gets very slippery when wet.

Easy to find close to the center of Hilo, walking distance to restaurants and grocery store.

Hosts are very friendly and respectful of your privacy while at the same time takes the time to help you with anything you might need.

Breakfast is great, breads, fruits, coffee, and several items that changed daily.

The only small issues we had was that it got a bit hot at night without AC, and the frogs outside made a lot of noise throughout the night, so we kept most windows closed, which in turn made it a bit hotter. Not a big problem and we all slept great.

All in all a great base for vulcano excursions. Its about a 45 min drive to the Vulcano national park.

Be sure to try the Hilo bay cafe for dinner. Top of the line. Just read the reviews.

“Great little B&B in Hilo.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Stayed here recently for a couple nights in the lava room. The shower was amazing! The room itself was spacious, stylish and comfortable.

On the downside it is an old home and the lava room is underneath the kitchen. If you plan on sleeping past 7am, you're going to be disappointed. Of course this meant we easily made it for breakfast each morning (8-9am).

Breakfast itself was okay with the fruit being the highlight for us. The owners were very cheerful and welcoming. We didn't make much / any use of the grounds.

We'd stay again if in Hilo.

“Charming, imaginative places and thoughtful, generous hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

Matthew and Danny gave us four wonderful days in their two delightful homes. We stayed in the Michener Room at the Hilo Bay Hale B&B for two nights and then moved to their Jungle Farmhouse in Pahoa for the next two nights. We hated to leave! Both homes are imaginatively decorated with interesting collections and each is set in a lush garden or jungle environment. Breakfast at the Hilo home was scrumptious and though no breakfast is provided at the farmhouse, Matthew and Danny gave us tangerines from their trees and fresh-laid eggs from their chickens. (The Silky chicks were almost too cute to bear.) M and D thought of everything - at least, they thought of everything we needed. Laundry facilities are available to guests at both homes and they even provided snorkeling equipment. After their generous pampering, I was particularly sad to transfer to the Hilton Waikoloa where my husband's conference was held and where it seems they charge extra for the air you breathe.
