Stayed at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort in late February 2012.
Our room was on the 6th floor of the 12 story building. Within an hour of our arrival the fire alarm went off. The announcement said to evacuate and to use the stairs and not the elevator. The stairway lights in the lower floors did not work and people had to use their cell phones to light the way. The exit doors from the stairway are not marked with floor numbers so you couldn't tell which floor you were on.
When we gathered in the lobby it was next to impossible to hear any instructions. There was a large party in an open room below the lobby and the band continued to play while the guests were being evacuated.I asked a member of the hotel staff why the party was continuing and she told me that they would evacuated if necessary.
About this time the hotel security man came up to us and said it was safe to return to the room. He told us that he had run through the hotel (12 floors) and didn't find anything. He said that we could tell that he was running because he was sweating.
It was about this time that I noticed that missing in all this excitement was the Hilo Fire Department. When I asked the security man why they weren't there I was told that the fire department doesn't come until the security man runs through
the 12 story building. I don't know if this a fire department policy or a hotel policy, but either way its scary and not safe.
Other than than that.......when I checked in I had a "yelling" conversation with the desk clerk because of the noise from the party below us. I had booked (and prepaid) for a king sized bed but they didn't have one available. The room we did get was clean with a spectacular
view of the water and Mauna Kea.
The hotel had many good qualities but they were trumped by the safety issue.
