“Great place and wonderful hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

This is our second time staying with Kurt and Kana at Beautiful Edge and we'll stay with them every time we visit Hawaii. It's a spectacular location at the South end of Captain Cook overlooking the bay from a perfect deck to watch the sunsets. It's away from the tourist hubub of Kona, but an easy drive to any of the Kona attractions. Less than 20 minutes to any of the island's three best snorkeling locations, Kealakekua Bay, Place of Refuge, or Kalaluu.

It's a great space, wonderfully decorated, with wonderful jungle fruits all around (the first time you drive in the road feels a bit rough, but you get used to it quickly). The breakfasts are wonderful, full of amazing fruits. But the nicest part is Kurt and Kana (and their amazing 6-year-old Jena). Kurt's lived all over the world, taught at different universities, started a great project with Cambodian orphans, just a fascinating person, who's also a great guide to the island. Kana is just enormously welcoming. Their daughter Jena is just really fun--spent some really fun time playing with her...but we also had our privacy whenever we wanted. Just couldn't recommend the place more highly. (Before we stayed the first time we'd stayed at a well-recommended place called Areca Palms which was gorgeous, but where the owner was so stuffy in terms of don't touch this, don't touch that, and don't sit here, that it totally ruined the stay--this is the opposite...relaxed, welcoming and a place where you immediately feel at home.

totally recommended

Room Tip: They have three rooms with photos. Ask Kurt to describe them. There's a smaller lovely room that...

“Can't beat the hospitality"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

My wife and I have been to The Edge 2 years in a row. Not only are the owners/family superb hosts but you cannot duplicate the view. If you are looking for activities or just relaxation, I recommend this B&B without hesitation. It may be the only place we will stay whenever we go back to the Big Island.

Room Tip: Just ask the Host

Great to see you again, and thank you for your kind words. While it's nice (for us) to meet new people from around the world, it's especially nice to catch up with the lives of former guests. It's like seeing old friends again. In fact, that's exactly what it is. Mahalo !

“Overall a really good experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Clean, nice people, really good food, lovely view, but a bit off the beaten track (you have to drive down a cliff through a jungle to get there!). But highly recommended.

Nice review, but I'm afraid that the words "cliff" and "jungle" are misleading and may unnecessarily scare many folks away. Here's the facts -- There's a highway from the Kona Airport to two tenths of a mile from our B&B. (It takes twenty to twenty five minutes.) From the highway there is a county road leading to the Edge. Because there are very few houses in the immediate area (that's one of the things that makes it so peaceful here), the county doesn't do a very good job at maintaining the road. There are some potholes in the road, but nothing at all dangerous and it takes less than five minutes to drive this bumpy, but paved, stretch. No vehicle, large or small, has ever had difficulty in traveling the road. The "jungle" feeling is very nice to most guests and a good approach to the Beautiful Edge of the World. Be advised, there are no lions, tigers, elephants or snakes, just beautiful native forest and the view at the end of the stretch (of Kealakekua Bay) is truly glorious.

“The Edge of the World B & B - Needs New Pillows, Bed Linens, Cleaning & Updating”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2011

My wife and I recently spent six days (April 5 – 11), at “the Edge of the World B & B in Kailua-Kona Hawaii. While there we stayed in the Pacific room that had a spectacular view from our lanai of the Pacific Ocean. Each morning we were served a lovely breakfast by our “substitute” hosts Karen & Keith (the owner Kurt and his family are away until December 2011).

Some things about our stay at “The Edge” that left us disappointed were that the bathroom and fixtures were showing their age and in need of updating. Our room (walls, carpet and baseboards) needed a thorough vacuuming/cleaning. Anytime we had occasion to look under or behind any furniture there were a lot of dead insects along with accumulated debris. During our 6 nights there we were not offered fresh sheets and only received fresh towels when after several days we asked if we could put our towels in the dryer to “freshen them up”. This end of the “big island” often receives rain in the afternoon/evening and your clothes and towels, bedding etc., usually feel damp.

On the morning of our departure my wife stripped the pillowcases and sheets off the bed for our hosts and we were both shocked. The pillows and pillow covers under the pillowcases were very badly stained. The mattress cover was torn and the mattress “topper” was also badly stained. We did not look under the mattress topper to see the actual mattress. The pillows, covers, mattress topper (possibly even the mattress itself), should all have been put in the garbage. We shuddered at the thought that we had spent the better part of a week sleeping in this bed.

This B & B is well located on the island with good access to the town of Kona and many beaches and worthwhile places to visit. There is also a wide choice of places nearby to eat lunch and dinner. As others have commented, the drive down to the B & B from the highway takes a little getting used to. If at all possible you should arrive before dark at least on your first night - possibly every night. We frequently stay in B & B’s when traveling as this enables us to learn very quickly the local places of interest through suggestions by your hosts as well as the opportunities to interact with other guests.

Thank you for your review. I spoke with the interim manager about this (he has hence moved back to Florida). In his opinion it is an extreme exaggeration perhaps sparked by personality clash.. (We've never had a complaint of this nature, and the review surprised me.). We (owner/manager) have returned from our extended stay in China and Cambodia and I can assure everyone that all beds and bedding are in tip top shape. We pride ourselves in providing a very clean, comfortable, convenient, and friendly environment to make as home-base for exploring the Big Island, as we have done for twenty years.

“A Great Escape!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

The property is situated on a working coffee plantation studded with mac nut trees, papayas, bananas and other fruits and veggies. Needless to say, the coffee each day was wonderful. We stayed in a room called the "Crow's Nest", with its private lanai overlooking the plantation and Kealakekua Bay 1,000 feet below. The room was spacious and clean and well ventilated, with balmy tropical breezes from the trade winds wafting over our bodies each night as we slept. Keith and Karen Klukat are running the B&B (and the farm) for proprietor Kurt while he pursues his dream in that other tropical paradise, Hainan, off the coast of China. They are wonderfully warm and gracious people and they are doing a terriffic job as hosts. Karen's breakfasts each day were unbelievably delicious and featured produce from the farm. We had to share our breakfast with gold dust day geckos from time to time but they only wanted the sweet things and didn't take much. There are a couple of cats, one of which, OJ, appears to be sedated. I've never seen such a comically lethargic feline. Nothing shakes him up. Free WiFi is available if you need access to the internet and there are some wonderful restaurants nearby. We can recommend Big Jakes Hawaiian BBQ, Keei Café, Mi's Italian Bistro and for a truly unique experience at a reasonable price ($28 dinner for two with a cocktail!) don't miss the Manago Hotel!
