“Cozy and charming best describes the Areca Palms in Captain Cook”

Our recent visit to The Big Island consisted of 4 nights at a resort and 6 nights at the Areca Palms in Captain Cook. While the resort was nice...it was the Areca Palms we enjoyed the most.
Our room was cozy and extremely clean. (We are picky about that) We had everything we needed. The bathroom was roomy, the bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of closet room for our clothes.
The house itself sits back off the main road a ways and is quiet. The only sounds at night are the comforting sounds of crickets. You may be awakened by a rooster from next door but you will probably be awake by then anyway.
The breakfasts are just as all the reviews have stated...wonderful. You will be spoiled by the variety that you will not find any where else. Part of the charm was having breakfast with the rest of the guests and the conversations that ensued.
Janice and Steve are gracious hosts and will do everything they can to make your stay pleasant, including giving you ideas for day trips complete with instructions on how to get where you want to go.
Thank you to Janice and Steve Glass for a wonderful time. We will return again to the Areca Palms.

“Excellent!!”

We stayed at the Areca Palms for 4 nights in January 2011. Steve and Janice were great hosts. They gave good suggestions for activities and provided a wonderful place to stay. The rooms were immaculate and there was a really nice deck and sitting area for the guests to hang out. We even got a free room upgrade! The breakfasts were excellent- they consisted of coffee & juice, fresh fruit and some sort of large serving of a main dish (french toast, quiche etc.). They even provided us breakfast to go one morning because we had to leave early for the airport.

“A very friendly place on a wonderful island”

This B&B is situated in a very beautiful surrounding. The garden welcomes you and the house is airy, bright. Rooms are very comfortable, as is the bath room.

Wonderful welcome from the owners every morning, with an incredible breakfast, each day different. I recommend the fruits, fresh, juice, jelly...

The situation on the ISland is good, even if somewhat far from both the volcano NP of the Hilo side. Kona is about 15 minute drive.

“Exceptional place to stay in South Kona”

Wonderful B&B, with exceptional hosts, amazing breakfasts. Steve and Janice really extend themselves to make sure their guests have a fine time on the Big Island. Both are enthusiastic about Hawaiian culture and sites and love to share their insights and observations. Steve lent me snorkeling equipment, beach chairs, beach towels; Janice made us a "take out" breakfast when she heard we were heading to Volcano at 7:30 a.m. Without Steven's advice, we would not have gone star-gazing above the clouds -- a highlight of our trip to Hawaii. (I truly do not understand any of the negative comments, but some folks really don't understand the B&B experience since Areca Palms is a truly top-tier B&B -- and we've been to many.)

“Everything I Wanted in a B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

I spent five nights at this B&B several miles south of Kona.

This is an immaculate, well maintained, and well-organized B&B. I loved it for it was so relaxing. Breakfasts (as delicious and ample as others have posted) are served out on the lanai that’s also a good place to relax in the late afternoons in one of the comfortable chairs with your drink in hand, listening to the birds and seeing the ocean in the distance. The grounds are as immaculate as the house and a horticulturalist’s dream.

The owners give you your privacy but are there to give advice when needed. A couple of earlier postings made remarks about the personalities of the owners. I found Janice to be lively and chipper and enthusiastic. I found Steve to be reserved but a good table converser at breakfast. He is knowledgeable and knows a lot about a lot of things.

For my four-day stay there, they lent me snorkeling equipment (with a mask that fitted fine), a large beach blanket, and a beach chair. Several outstanding beaches for snorkeling and swimming are not far away. And, of course, the busy tourist town of Kailua-Kona is not far off.

The house sits on a hill at an altitude of 1500 feet that, as Steve pointed out, is an ideal one for not having to have air-conditioning or heat.
