Our travel plans had been somewhat fluid and we only determined earlier that day that we would be needing a room in Sheridan. Also, we knew we would be pulling in at or after 11pm, leaving us with no opportunity to "shop around" or go to another hotel should the accommodations be substandard. Accordingly, I was willing to pay over $100/night and stick with a national brand, to ensure a satisfactory, if not elegant, lodging experience. Browsing what few reviews I could read through at the slow pace of the internet service on my phone when I first was looking, I found some good and some bad reviews of this place, with most being at least somewhat positive. I should have trusted the negative reviews.
We rolled in around 11:30p and things started off well. The hotel itself is very easy to find, being right off the interstate with sufficient parking. The night desk clerk was awake, friendly, and efficient. But the room itself left much to be desired.
I immediately noticed the green Fruit Loop piece of cereal (they serve Fruit Loops at the continental breakfast, so a previous guest obviously brought some up to the room) on the floor behind the room door when we closed it behind us, and then noticed the used bath towel still hanging on the hook on the bathroom wall behind that door. Then there were the splotches of some dried liquid on the wall by a waste basket where someone must have tossed something in and it hit or splashed against the wall first; the fire alarm was hanging from the ceiling, suspended by its wires with the battery removed (I expect a previous guest probably removed the battery - fire alarms usually emit an annoying alert signal when the battery is low); and my wife noticed two separate pieces of chewing gum stuck to and smeared on the side of the night stand, right at eye level as you were lying in the bed. I of course slept next to the night stand. In comparison to these oversights, the general slap-dash vacuuming job (it was clear that anything but the main traffic path in the room had been skipped) was minor. Overall, attention to room cleanliness was way below average.
It crossed my mind to request a different room, but by this time we were exhausted from the drive and perhaps there were no other rooms available or no available rooms any cleaner than this one, so we simply crawled into bed and immediately fell asleep. The beds themselves appeared clean, although the mattresses were only adequate (not anything more than average - I expected better for the room price). Fortunately, we were very tired, had been camping the night before on the ground, and are relatively young, so we didn't really measure or suffer from the mattress quality.
In the morning, I gave a note to the front desk clerk cataloging the room deficiencies, mainly so that they would have some guest feedback to guide their staff and constructively improve their overall room cleaning approach. No price discount was requested and none was offered.
The continental breakfast was likewise adequate and I was happy to see hardboiled eggs. All in all however, the condition of the room, the common areas, and the breakfast were something I would expect in a sub-$70/night, not in a national brand at >$100/night (incl. tax). Accordingly, I rated the "Value" as poor and will not be staying there in the future, although I do anticipate traveling through Sheridan again.
