We were moving from Portland, OR to Houston, TX with a 16 ft moving truck and a trailer for our car. Rawlins, WY was at about half way of our journey, and here's our ordeal:
1. We were able to make a reservation online at around 11:00 pm while we were at Rock Springs, WY, even when the hotel was supposedly have been sold out earlier that evening (around 7 pm, as I was told). There seemed to be a flaw in the online reservation system that allowed it to happen.
2. The hotel staff was unsympathetic and rather not helpful as we arrived at the hotel at midnight to find out there was no room for us, after having been driving for more than 12 hours. The hotel clerk did not want to help us to find another place to stay or anything -- He kept saying it wasn't his problem that we made reservation online when they had no rooms available.
3. Hotel's parking lot layout was confusing and was not clearly marked so our moving truck and trail ended up stuck in a spot where we could not get out of the parking lot -- Basically if you have a large vehicle and make 1 wrong entrance, there's no turn around or loop around to get out. The hotel sign is situated right in the middle of the drive way that goes around the hotel so no cars can get through if there are cars parked behind the hotel. Who puts a concrete and steel sign right in the middle of a drive way!!!!! The hotel clerk once again expressed that it wasn't his problem that we didn't see the large vehicle parking signage even though it was very dark outside. After we told him that unless he helped us get the truck out, none of the other hotel guests could get out because we were blocking their vehicles, the clerk finally helped us getting the moving truck out of the parking lot That was after spending more than an hour in the middle of the night dealing with it.
4. All of this could have been avoided had the hotel staff answered their phone when we called prior to making our online reservation. When we called, the phone just kept ringing and ringing, there was no answering machine, no messages indicating that they were full or any type of answer at all. And that was why we then went to the online reservation. Had we found out about the hotel had no vacancy, we would have made reservation as a different hotel/town and not wasted our resting time.
We had always been happy with Super 8, but after this ordeal, we are apprehensive to stay at any Super 8, and DEFINITELY NOT at the Super 8 at Rawlins, WY.
