My wife and I stayed three nights in Signal Mountain Lodge at the end of our trek through Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. We were in Grand Teton in early September 2011. When we visit the National Parks we prefer to stay inside the park, if there are lodging options available. There are several options in Grand Teton, and after weighing the various factors (cost, location, amenities), we opted to stay at Signal Mountain. I think we made a very good choice.
Signal Mountain Lodge is located along the southeast shore of Jackson Lake, just off of the Teton Park Road. The lodge is actually a complex of buildings. The first building you pass once you turn off the main road and into the complex is a gas station and convenience store which has a good selection of snacks and drinks. The next building has the food services. Inside is a gift shop, Peak’s restaurant (we never ate here)), Trapper Grill (open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; we had breakfast here once) and Deadman’s Bar (a cozy little bar that serves dinner as well; we ate here twice and really enjoyed it. They serve the same food as in Trapper Grill). The central building contains the reservation desk and a common area with computer access, TV, games and space just to sit and relax. There is also free coffee available. We never really used any of the common areas, as the park was what we came to see.
Lodging is provided via a series of “cabins” that are arrayed between the reservation building and Jackson Lake. I believe that most of the cabins are made up of four connected units. All looked to be in good shape. There are several located right along the lake shore, so they have stunning views. Our cabin was off the shore but was it still great place to stay.
The living quarters was basically a large motel room and very well appointed. We had a king-size bed and there was still a lot of space in the room. There was a table with two chairs, a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker in the room. This was nice for the one evening that we decided just to get carry-out pizza from Leak’ Marina for dinner, along with some beer from the convenience store (Snake River Brewing Company Pale Ale…good stuff). This made for a relaxing evening after a long day of exploring the park. The cabin had a full-size bathroom. We found the cabin to be clean and comfortable.
The personnel at Signal Mountain were all very friendly and helpful. This includes the folks at the front desk, in all of the dining facilities, the gift shop and the gas station.
We enjoyed our stay at Signal Mountain Lodge. The only knock on the lodging (and this applies to any place in the park) is that it is not that centrally located. While it is not too far from any given place, there is still a drive involved to get to the main attractions or the trailheads into the mountains. But that is a minor issue and one that that applies to anyplace you stay in the park, I think. Overall, Signal Mountain Lodge made a great base for our time in Grand Teton National Park.
