My 12 year old daughter and I just finished our week at the Vee Bar Guest Ranch for the third year in a row and once again we had an amazing experience.
We were introduced to the Vee Bar and the Cole family by clients in Charlotte who had taken their daughters to the ranch the year before. My daughter and I had been looking for a safe place where we could ride horses and have a daddy/daughter experience. The Vee Bar surpassed all our expectations.
From the moment at check-in when I asked for a room key and Brent said "we don't lock our doors around here" you knew you were in a different kind of place. The Cole family has created an authentic western experience for their guests that is full of horse back riding, incredibly good food served family style, other activities like tubing the Little Laramie River, fishing, hiking and exhibitions like sheep dog herding sheep. Throw in a hay ride and cook out with Western music, working a herd of cattle on horseback to move them from one pasture to another and a camping trip and cook out at the Deerwood Ranch and you have a vacation experience you will remember for a lifetime.
The horseback riding is amazing. The Vee Bar has a great stable of horses that they are able to match up with their guests based on how much riding experience they have. From gentle horses for little kids or inexperienced riders to fast, spirited horses for folks who know how to ride, the experience is tailored to the guests (and the wranglers will break you out into smaller groups to make sure you get the riding experience you want). Our favorite ride is the climb up Verbena Hill and the long lope across the hilltop.
The wild life on the Ranch is incredible as well. This year we saw bald eagles, red tail hawks, elk calves, mule deer bucks, antelope and a bobcat!
The accommodations at the Ranch are perfect for the experience--very comfortable rooms furnished western style. We have always stayed in one of the Riverside Suites, which allows you to fall asleep listening to the Little Laramie River flow nearby. The washer/dryer makes packing for a week easier and the refrigerator helps keep snacks and drinks handy (although the honor saloon is a short walk away and is open 24 hours a day).
The food is truly excellent. The Vee Bar has a tremendous chef who has created a varied assortment of meals, all served buffet style in the Lodge. From the first dinner on Sunday night to the last breakfast on Saturday, meal time is something everyone looks forward to at the Ranch.
Finally, the Cole family makes the Vee Bar experience special. To watch three generations of a family work together to serve their guests and make the experience meaningful is something that you seldom get to see these days. My daughter remarked on the drive back to Denver that the Coles were "the nicest family she had ever seen".
