We stayed at the Buckrail Lodge for the first time eight years ago, and we were so happy with the motel then that we decided to return for five nights in early August this year. We're happy we did. The Buckrail is a wonderful, small family-run motel in Jackson, and compared to some of the other lodging options in the area, it's a great bargain.
Our room was a spacious one with two queen beds, so there was ample room for our bags and hiking gear, and the beds themselves were quite cozy after long days hiking in Grand Teton NP. The motel is a few blocks from downtown Jackson in a quiet residential area, but it's just a short (and pleasant) walk to the town square and the main commercial district. At a leisurely pace, it takes maybe 10 minutes to get from the Buckrail Lodge to central Jackson. Across from the single row of motel rooms, there's a small courtyard with lawn chairs and a swing, which was nice for enjoying the cool evenings in Jackson. Guests have access to a computer in the motel office, too---which was particularly convenient for us since we generally don't travel with a laptop on vacation. Overall, the Buckrail will definitely be our first choice when we return to the area.
One thing worth mentioning, though it's separate from the motel itself: the owner's son runs a rafting business---Solitude Float Trips---and we took an early-morning (6 a.m.) float trip down the Snake while we were there. The trip was wonderful---well worth the money (and the 4:30 wake-up) to see the Tetons as the day dawned.
