My daughter and her husband, their two boys aged 9 and 6 and I recently spent three days at The Goosewing Ranch. Having never been to a "dude" ranch before, none of us really had a clear idea of what was in store for us aside from the obvious horse centric activities. Actually my son-in-law had experienced several really bad horse riding events before and was none too enthusiastic at first about getting back up on one.
After what seemed like an interminable drive over a less than perfect road surface (to be honest, we had been warned and were thus not too ruffled by the experience although mighty happy to finally get there) we arrived at the ranch, given a brief introductory spiel and sent to our cabins which wee perched on a rise overlooking a beautiful green pasture and hills.
The cabins were clean, comfortable, spacious and decorated in what I guess is cowboy/wrangler decor which was actually cozy and not kitschy. Gas fireplaces were there but we never needed them.
The personnel were uniformly polite, friendly, informative and very accommodating to our various riding skills. Horses were chosen for us depending on our experience and the trail rides we did were expertly guided , the lunch they packed for us was fine, the scenery was spectacular...so much so that we all opted to go again the next day. I chose to be a little more adventurous the second day, craving more speed and excitement and boy, did I get that in spades. A totally exhilarating experience. And yes, there IS a hot tub!
Additionally we were given the opportunity to learn grooming and caring for our horses and my grand kids developed quite a bond with their mounts.
In addition to riding, there were archery lessons one night, rifle target shooting another, kickball games, swimming, cocktails and hors d' oeuvres by the pool. There was never a dull moment if one wanted to participate. The good news is that no one HAD to.
The lodge was wonderful, the food was really good, the ambiance was welcoming and not at all intimidating. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and accommodate our requests and we left feeling that we had made some new friends and learned a bit about a way of life very foreign to us as urban dwellers.
I cannot recommend this place more highly.
