“Perfect hospitality in the Old West gem!”

My mother, my three dachshunds and I stayed here on a cross country trip from Houston TX to Cagary AB. This hotel was certainly the highlight of our journey. Dawn greeted us - puppies included - with open arms! We had some red wine in the lobby as she regaled us of the labour of love that was restoring this fabulous building. We had the hotel almost to ourselves so had a fantastic time exploring the rooms - it is almost like a working museum.
Practically speaking, the Internet was reliable and our rooms were clean and comfortable. Mom stayed in the Hoover Suite (which is beautifully appointed). I was across the hall in the Cowboy Corral - this suite is not nearly as attractive as the rooms, but it was very comfortable with direct access to a side yard, which was perfect for the dogs and I. I also appreciated having the kitchen for getting their breakfasts together and keeping them clean.
There are not a lot of dinner options in the town, but there was a grocery store about 4 blocks away, so we picked up some basics and made ourselves a picnic in the lobby. Breakfast at the Busy Bee cafe was just what we needed the next morning to get us moving on the next leg of our journey.
The Occidental is a must for anyone who loves history, antiques, the Old West and quirk!

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor are very quiet and great if you have pets.

“Unexpected gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

My husband and I were looking for pet friendly overnight lodging on our way back from Montana. On a whim we got on the website for the Occidental and were pleasantly surprised by the improvement in the appearance of the hotel. We had not visited there in several years and certainly not since the new management bought around 7 years ago. We stayed in the Cowboy Corral Suite which is room 56. It is pet friendly and on the ground floor with a separate entrance which was great for taking our 80 pound dog in and out without walking her through the lobby. There was a great full kitchen that had really old (charmingly so) appliances that all worked and a microwave and modern coffee maker. The hotel has really been cleaned up and staged to reproduce the look it had during it's heyday. The lobby in particular is just beautiful. All in all comfortable and affordable lodging that is fun and interesting due to it's history. Beats a generic room at a chain hotel hands down!

Room Tip: If having a pet in the room is not a concern I would recommend a room in the back of the hotel upsta...

“Perfect historic hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

What a great place to stay. You have to like history to enjoy this hotel. We stayed in the Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid's room. It has a narrow escape stairway that they used to get out of the hotel when the law came. Very clean. Stunning antiques original to the era and the hotel. The bed was quite old, too soft and swayed in the middle. But we liked it anyway, because we stayed there for the whole experience. We were the only ones in this wing to the late season that we went, but I think it could be very loud when busy. The owner is wonderful and knows so much about the hotel and its history. Our kids thought it was great! Old clawfoot tub for shower - clean and cool. Highly recommend.

“Made it a tradition”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

We've stayed here every November for the past 5 years. Rooms are historically accurate and the beds are comfy. Buffalo is a pretty quiet town this time of year but the bar is friendly and there are usually locals around more than willing to chat. If you are lucky you'll be there for the weekly jam complete with local musicians and an enthusiastic crowd. It's a real hotel in the heart of a real Wyoming town, not some sterile McVictorian replica.

Be aware that this is NOT a Holiday Inn Express. Thank God.

“Quirky or beautifully kept up?”

Stopped here while driving through the Historic Hotels of the Rockies group for an article and fell instantly in love with the place.

The story behind the furnishings is an interesting one and worth asking the owners about. The saloon is breathtakingly old fashioned complete with bullet holes in the walls and the lobby makes you want to throw yourself down in an overstuffed chair and listen to the music from the 30's and 40's coming from the radio. In short, this is a great place!

In the middle of nowhere might insinuate there would be nothing of substance in Buffalo, WY, but rest assured there is! My traveling companion and I had a quick lunch in the saloon - she having chili, me having tomato bisque (yes, bisque in the middle of the Wyoming prairie!). The bartender is funny and a story teller!

The dining room is truly the highlight of the hotel. Tables in the windows and the safe make for an enjoyable dining experience coupled with delicious food.

The rooms of the hotel each have some kind of story attached to them as this was once a thriving brothel and the madam's rooms are rumored to have a ghost.

This is one location that is highly recommended for fans of the old west!

Room Tip: Booked long in advance, try to get the madam's bedroom.
