THE Place to go in Wisconsin dells --we have stayed here several times. However, I would only recommend staying in the Glacier Canyon Condos -- I wouldn't really recommend the Wilderness hotel. differences:
hotel -- is just a hotel -- rooms are getting a bit outdated, older, not very big. To be fair, the last time we stayed in the hotel was at least 6 years ago
Glacier Canyon Lodge -- this is fabulous. We always try to get the presidential floor (that is the top floor) and the rooms are amazing. We usually stay in a 4 bdrm Presidential with another family. It has 4 bedrooms and 3 (or 4) bathrooms. The rooms are HUGE -- the best part is that they have a huge central area, very large dining table and beautiful kitchen (granite counter tops etc). The kitchen is quite large, we usually go to walmart upon our arrival and pick up a weeks worth of groceries. It is SO easy to make your meals in this huge kitchen (lots of cabinet space, full size appliances). We have 7 kids between the 2 families, we will make meals for the kids and the adults will go out for dinner a few times -- the kids are usually tired from all the fun and need a break so they are HAPPY to hang back in the room watching a movie etc... The waterpark at Wilderness is really fun. Last time we were in the area we also spent 1 day at Kalahari's indoor arcade, that was fun but very expensive. Look for coupons! One of my kids FAVORITE things to do....there is a park not far from the dells -- Devils Lake -- the park is absolutely beautiful! The hiking is amazing, the lake is breathtaking --- I would compare it to Lake Tahoe. It is just gorgeous. We have gone twice to this park and it has never been busy. We usually visit the area in April -- so not high traffic time. The park is a GREAT getaway -- maybe 20 minutes from the hotel -- and the kids love to hike and get a little 'outside' time. Overall -- this is a GREAT getaway -- your family will love it -- I recommend spending extra days so you can really relax and not feel like you NEED to be using the waterpark 24x7.
The only downfall -- if you have small children -- the walk from the glacier canyon to the waterparks is not short......depending on where your room is -- you could be walking up to 20 minutes (maybe more) to get to the park --- BRING a stroller if you have little ones -- you will need it! You can take the shuttles but sometimes they seem like more hassle than not.....and if you have little ones with a bunch of stuff -- a little difficult.
We stayed at the lake condos one year when we had little ones (2 years old) and it was wonderful. The lake condo has its very own 'small' waterpark right in the hotel, it is fabulous for small children - very easy for you as parents to watch them play and not crazy busy as it is in the wilderness waterparks. If you want to be able to 'sit' and watch the kids - this is a great place to be. Our hubbys and older kids would just take the shuttle over to the wilderness and us moms stayed back and played with the little ones in the smaller waterpark. The little ones love it and so did we -- if you are in the Wilderness - you have to FOLLOW your little one everywhere -- you will lose them in 3 minutes flat - the 'little' kid areas are huge and they aren't just little kids playing in those areas.
overall -- a definite MUST visit for families -- you will love it here - the kids will have a blast.
fyi-- they do not have any maid service on the condos (which is a positive for us! -- we prefer to not have someone coming in/out of our rooms)
oh-- they also plan activities for kids -- this is wonderful -- they do a duck race some mornings and they do bingo etc...my kids love the break from the waterpark. The arcade is also a ton of fun as well as the laser tag (we usually do one family game of laser tag).
pack light -- the condos have washer/dryers --another HUGE benefit -- you can wash your clothes before you go home! this is such a must have when traveling with children!
