“River Inn- Wonderful Location, GREAT VIEWS, stuck in a time warp”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

Me and my family have stayed at the Hotel several times(I remember when it was the River INN), so when I think of the place, I have fond memories.
The first time we stayed, the kids were very leery because we usually stayed at Motels, and they didn't see a pool. I had to re-assure them that they had an inside pool and a pool across the street.
Upon entering our room, I was "DELIGHTED" to see that me and the Mrs. would have some privacy(we had a 2 room suite) and the kids had the big room with queen beds, their own TV, and 1-helluva view. The views from the kids room was just awesome!
On Saturday, we ordered breakfast(in-room), and it was a "feast".(Don't know if they still serve food anymore,) but the family really enjoyed the breakfast. Later we went to the pool(kind of small) but very nice. I enjoyed the sauna and steam room, after a little work-out(to burn off the breakfast). We spent time in the pool area EVERY DAY!
The reason I know this place was nice(besides my own Opinion) The wife and kids were smiling and quite content, and talked about the trip weeks, months after we got back. home.

Now the bad- the place really could use a little "updating". You get the feeling they have not done any work to the place since the 80's. The halls were very warm, as if they either had no air conditioning or they had it on "very low". And it wouldn't hurt to "Spray" every now and then. Don't know how the Lady Bugs got in, but they don't seem to want to check out.

All-in-all, for the price, location, and the wonder waterfront views, I would recommend the River INN to anyone, Just don't expect 5-star digs.
If I ever hit the Lotto, I'd make an offer on the place, put a few buck into renovations, and reaped the benefits of such a great location. the "potential" for the River Walk Hotel is endless....

FOOTNOTE- My last visit to River Inn was July 2007...

“good view but thats it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

made reservations by phone in advance, asked for the total cost, SURPRISE!!, we forgot to tell you the taxes! , thanks riverwalk, also the place is dated, still you get a metal key to enter the room, lots of noise but I will say it got quiet after 11:00 p.m., do a little more searching and find a better place that doesnt have the view, this place could be a goldmine but the effort just isnt there, hope this helps.

“"Avoid this hotel like the plague!"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2009

My husband and I chose the RiverWalk Hotel in Wisconsin Dells for our Anniversary because of its location, on the river and close to downtown attractions. The hotel itself is older and in need of repair. If they would spray for bees we might have been able to enjoy or river view from the patio room we paid for. The beds are ROCK HARD, the bathrooms are so small it is difficult to close the door when, there was no hot water for a morning shower, and the single employee working is hard to contact.

That would all be somewhat tolerable but when my husband and I could not sleep due to drunk hotel guests fighting outside our door and punching holes in the hallway walls, it was a bit much. After we stopped a drunk man from choking his girlfriend (who had already punched holes in the hallway wall outside of our door at midnight) we went down to the front desk to report the incident. The only employee was doubling as bartender and after we tried to get her attention for 15 minutes we finally just had to call the police ourselves. We did get the attention of the only other hotel employee, he was sitting at the bar, and we took him upstairs to show him the damage to the hotel that we witnessed a few minutes earlier. We also stopped the drunk guest in the hall and showed the male employee who he was.

The police came and took our report but we continued to watch underage drinkers hang out in the hotel bar, we watched smokers go in and out of non-smoking rooms, and we watched the two employees "watch" this take place. After the hallway incident, we could not sleep due to the loud party going on in the room next to us so we decided we might as well check out as this was our third and final night at the hotel. The male employee told us they would not refund our last night's stay. He did tell the room next to us they would have to pay for our room that night if they didn't quiet down. This worked fine until bar close time at 2am when the same guests came back from the hotel bar and grabbed our door handle and made comments by our door.

Prior to checking out the next morning after a short night, we called the front desk to inquire about the lack of hot water and told them we would like a discount off of our final bill for our last night's stay since we had prevented further damage to the hotel the night before. We had also prevented a woman from being choked by her boyfriend. Did I mention that my husband is a police officer from another state, so we really did prevent the woman from being harmed!

The older woman at the front desk aka: bartender from the night before NEVER offered any sort of apology for our inconvenience. Nor did she thank us for our help for the night before. Rather, she said she couldn’t do anything and continued to state that she was unaware of what had gone on and that stated that she only worked there. Other hotel guests on the lobby during check out thanked us as they also heard the activity from the night before in the same hallway.

We asked to have the number of the hotel owner and the woman gave us a number that was not direct when we called. We then asked her to call the owner and inquire about a discount on our behalf before we left the hotel. Reluctantly, she called him at another number and acted like she had no idea what had happened. We left with an offer for a total of $40.00 off (the woman had offered us $18.00 off) or the choice of a one night's stay at this hotel again. Guess which poor option we chose?

You are on your own at this place! Our best advice is to avoid this hotel like the plague!

“Magical if a bit musty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2009

Stayed by accident...got sick & had car probs & just landed here. The guy downstairs was very helpful trying to get my car fixed, but as it was a Sunday night, it was just cheaper to stay than paying the overtime repair charge. So the front desk guy, and the staff who all spoke Russian, set me up in a top floor room. It was drizzling that night and magical with the bugs and rain flying around.

I ended up staying 2 nights, pretty much just cooped in the hotel (I had brought some food up and the fridge was convenient) - watching the river and boats from the bed (where I was sick) and the balcony...lovely, though it was a little rickety, like others said. I hung out on the balcony a lot, as I was on the top floor, once I discovered that the turkey vultures had their nest only a few feet up on the roof, behind the hotel's TV dish...pretty cool. Rocks, water, birds, fish below, sparkling insects in the moonlight and dancing drizzley rain....magical

It *was* a little musty, but the temperature was so pleasant I just left the sliding door open almost all the time.

I was glad it wasn't "nicer" because my $69 room might have been more.

I availed myself use of the dock to feed the fish very early my last AM, and also swam in the pool later, though I didn't trust it completely (I had swimmer's ear once in Florida, from a hotel pool - but it seemed chlorinated enough...I was just cautious because I had been sick). They let me check out late, and were taking mattresses down from the rooms surrounding me, for the season.
