Considering the type of motel this is - a throwback to the old roadside motels that used to dot the landscape, I'd say that this was above average. I kind of miss old motels like this and while I wouldn't stay at a place like this is most parts of the country for safety and other reasons (rooms open to the outside) in Lakewood it's no problem since it's a very safe area. Rooms were nice, heat worked VERY well and overall it was a nice reminder of how traveling used to be "back in the day."
Best part of staying at the North Star isn't the motel itself but the FANTASTIC restaurant and bar across the street called Club 32. You HAVE to go there if you are staying in Lakewood. Simple food...nothing fancy...but great quality. Steaks and Prime rib are a must. By far Club 32 is the best restaurant within 30 miles and while tourists tend to go other places, the locals all know about "the club" and that is where they go.
